Hello all!

I've been lurking here for a few weeks but have decided to finally create an account and post something.

My kitty Bailey has been having tummy troubles since the beginning of December... well longer really but it wasnt something we couldnt handle with a simple food change before.

In the beginning of December she got extremely constipated with basically hair, and we had to take her to the emergency vet for a clean out.  Took her a few days to recover from that, they put her on a high fiber diet, with miralax mixed into her food and for about 3 weeks she did excellent.

Then suddenly at the beginning of January she started vomiting twice daily.  We took her in again and the doc figures (without doing anything invasive) that she probably has inflamed bowel disease... so we switched her to grain free and he started a prescription for cisapride.

Her vomiting then descreased to about once a day or every other day... but then suddenly she stopped eating.  I brought her in again and he did an ultrasound and it showed her stomach was very inflamed and there was something in her stomach... possibly the baby food I'd managed to get her to eat a few hours prior to bringing her in.  So he gave us a prescription for an antacid and anti-inflamatory... this is where everything has really started getting "fun".  She took about 2 days worth of both medicines before she began violently choking them up immediately after I administered them. To be fair the ant-inflamatory tastes like cough syrup.. but at this point (Friday last week) it has become impossible to get her to keep down any of the meds I am supposed to be giving her. She seemed to have been reacting very well to the meds tho, as on Friday her appetite returned and she was almost her old self... but because we couldnt get her to keep down her meds as of Sunday she'd stopped eating again. So we brought her in Monday again and he gave her a shot of anti-inflamatory.  Yesterday he also put in the presciption with the pharmacy that specilaizes in pet meds to get them in hopefully a less offensive flavor.

She started eating again yesterday and seems to be in better spirits..... but my biggest concern right now is that she hasn't pooped since last Thursday night. =\  It is Wednesday now.  Keep in mind she only really ate anything last Friday, a bit Saturday, and then again yesterday/this morning.

I am also freaking out cause I don't know what I'm gonna do if I cant sneak her meds into her food, because this injection only lasts about a week and he prefers not to continuously administer it for fear of her developing diabetes (a side effect I guess).

I stopped into the vet this morning and picked up some of that viyo I'd read about on threads here, hoping I could use it to sneak her meds in, but she wont touch it even plain. :( My doc isnt in today but the assistant mentioned a possibly blockage because of that "mystery thing" we saw in her ultrasound last week (Tuesday).  So now I am FLIPPING OUT about that...

She doesnt seem uncomfortable.... has been grooming a bit in bendy positions and doesnt complain if we pick her up.  Best of all is her appetite has returned but I know it is only temporary if we cant get her to take her meds.  Oh and she also seems to have stopped vomiting.... no pukes since Sunday... (knock on wood)

HELP! :( I am so desperate!

How worried should I be that she is not pooping? Has anyone had their kitty go this long?

How am I gonna give her her meds if she chokes them straight up??? :(

PS- I did manage to get a dose of cisapride in her food this morning.... it has the less offensive smell/taste of all the meds she has so she ate it ok.

Welcome to The Cat Site. I'm sorry Bailey is having problems. How old is she. ibd.kitty might give you some information.
Is a blockage the same as an obstructio?. Cisapride if anything can cause diarrhea, although every cat is different. But if she isn't eating much, then she won't be pooping much.

I would want to know more about that "mysterious thing". X-ray? MRI?
Finally, some liquid medications can be flavored with tuna/chicken/bubblegum flavor. (Ritz likes all three flavors.) Perhaps that is an option.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

Thanks Ritz. :)

Bailey is 10.

The cisparide definitely gives her diarrhea... the few poops she has had since we put her on it have been very runny :(

The "mystery thing" we saw in the ultrasound was in her stomach..... we couldnt tell much by looking but he dismissed it as possibly the little bit of food she had eaten earlier that day.... otherwise it could have been hair but he was happy to ignore that as she has pooped twice since we saw it.... it wasnt brought up again til I mentioned it to the assistant I spoke to this morning when I mentioned she hasnt pooped since last Thursday. :(

I am waiting for them to call me about the 2 prescriptions they are compounding into different flavors..... I really really hope I can sneak them into her food without her noticing.  Otherwise I have no idea what I'm gonna do. :(

Well good news!

My Bailey finally pooped this morning! After almost a whole week!

She never showed any signs of straining or needing to poop (I've become quite accustomed to how she behaves when she is constipated)... and her poo this morning was quite runny..... but on the bright side it was no longer dark like it was all week last week.

I am thinking about reducing her cisparide since the few poos she has had on it were very runny.  The doc originally prescribed it because she was vomiting.... does anyone else have experience with it being prescribed for this reason?

I'm supposed to pick up her other 2 prescriptions today that are flavored..... really hope she will eat them with her food... fingers crossed!

Tim was on cisapride for about a year for constipation. When I learned cisapride is dependency-forming, I wanted to take him off cisapride and try other ways to manage his bowels. Tim took a small dose of cisapride every day for seven months and it took us four months to wean him off this medication.

Cisapride works by stimulating certain nerves and muscles in the digestive tract to move food along more quickly. This is why Tim was originally on it for constipation, and probably why your Bailey is on it for vomiting and has diarrhea right now. I can tell you, Tim still vomited on cisapride and I had to overhaul his diet to resolve that. By making dietary changes, we believe we resolved what caused his two bad constipation episodes, which is why we felt we could wean him off cisapride.

I hope you are able to figure out what is causing Bailey's tummy troubles. Keep us posted.
