Why does my 2 year old kitten's whiskers look like they have been trimmed-off and only 1/6 inch was left sticking out from the base. We noticed it this afternoon when we got home from work.

Well they do fall out and sometimes the thick ones fall out faster than the thin ones and it looks they have nothing but thin ones while thick ones that are still growing out. If you look closely do you not see any thin ones?

Indoor, and they are all basically the same length and smooth as if they got cut but no one was home the day we noticed it.

I had a cat (Coch) that lost all whiskers very quickly on one side during emotionally stressful situations. It happened twice. Once after the lose of her original owner. She spent a day in the apartment with her loved owner dead on the floor, followed by a week by herself with a stranger coming in to feed her. And once when a new cat was introduced even though it was ever so gradually. She had always been an only cat and a scaredy-cat. When she became terminally ill, I kept waiting for the whiskers to go, but they didn't - so I can only assume it was emotional stress. It was like they broke off all at once.

That's scary.

But, it's probably stress-related.

But her's were on both sides and nothing around her has changed to make her stressed or anything like that.
