Hello Everyone: my 13-year-old Male cat named Ramone is seriously ill. He had surgery on January 1, 2015 for tumor that needed to be removed from his intestine. The tumor was removed successfully and he was sent home with me to recover with instructions for me to syringe/ force-feed him 70ML of Hills a/d critical care food. I tried to get him to eat his regular canned food but he refused. I then attempted to  syringe/ force-feed him and was only able to get 30ML into him. At this point I will skip giving you all the details about what took place with the personnel at this veterinary hospital between January 9-January 15th. Suffice to say it was very nightmarish. The end result of their inaction forced me to take Ramone to another veterinarian. The doctor immediately diagnosed him as anorexic, dehydrated and physically weak. Her examination indicated that he had fatty liver disease. She admitted Ramone into the hospital and placed him on NG tube feeding as well as intravenous feeding. She said that he Will most likely need placement of an E–tube. I know that my primary task with Ramon is to get him to eat solid food on his own again. I would appreciate any advice you folks could send my way regarding ways to coax my dear feline friend to eat. Thank you.

I am sorry you and your kitty are going through this.  Unfortunately many vets don't take a kitty not eating enough seriously enough.  I have a kitty that went through fatty liver 4 years ago and had a feeding tube.  All you can do is get enough food in him through the feeding tube.  You can't entice a kitty with fatty liver to eat on their own.  He will have to begin recovering before he will eat on his own.

Don't blame yourself about the syringe feedings.  Some kitties tolerate them well others don't.  My kitty didn't tolerate them well at all.  I don't know if it was nausea, stress or a combo of both but he would vomit most of what I did manage to get down him.  I would watch youtube videos of kitties being syringe fed and things did not go like that at all with my kitty.

Dear Denice,

Thank you so much for your advice. I will hang in there with Ramone and pray for a good outcome for both of us.

Sincerely,
