A little background, first...A couple of weeks ago, I posted a prayer request for my best friends dad, who eventually passed away on Nov. 10th. My friend is a very popular Southern Gospel singer, and due to her schedule and mine I haven't had a chance to speak to her (except for text messaging) since the funeral. We got together Saturday night, and she made a request of me that I couldn't reuse. She wants me to take some of her dad's clothes and make small quilts for each of the six grandchildren so that they will have something of their grandfather to keep and cherish! I was so overwhelmed by her faith in me that I could do it, and that of all the friends and family she has I was the one she asked to to it that I was speechless for a little while! Wish me luck with them, and I'll post pics of them when I get done (may take a while, with my work schedule and such).

Oh My! That was very nice for you to do this for her. She must really depend and treasure your friendship to ask for you to do that for her. You are a great friend to make a wonderful present for the grandkids!

I think she probably has more faith in me than I do in myself! Deep down, I know I can, because it's not the first quilt I've ever done, but I am already getting worried about doing it, and I don't know why!
She's supposed to bring me the clothes New Years Eve, so then I can see what I've got to work with.

What an honor to be so trusted! If she has faith in you, you shouldn't doubt it yourself. I'm sure that the quilts will turn out fabulously, and will be treasured for generations to come.

Since I am not from your country, could someone explain to me about the American tradition of quilting? I don't want to offend but I was surprised to read about sewing a quilt from clothes of someone who died and give it as a gift to children. I really want to know!

That is the coolest idea. I'll have to tell my Mom that. We have enough people in our family who know how to quilt (but don't) that we could do this when my Grandma dies. Both my sister and I know how to too so we could do this for our kids. I repeat, that is the coolest idea. I would have loved to have a quilt of my Grandpa's clothes.

what a lovely thought. they are the best sort of quilts-the ones that mean so much more to both the giver and receiver. her father and the childrens grandfather will be remembered in such a warm (!) way.

No reason to be offended, but since I have a problem with explaining things to others, check out this site for the info on quilting....quilting at about.com .
As for the "dead folks quilt", it will just be a little something for the grandkids to remember their grandpa, kinda like letting them have something of his that they remember, but in a useful form. BTW, the grandkids range in age from 26 years to one that is being delivered by C-section today.....so some really will remember him, while the two youngest probably won't
.
