I live in a large rural community. we have a huge over population of stay cats. A lot of them are FIV and feline leukemia positive. We need to start a catch/release spay/neuter program. Does anyone know where to get grants for this sort of thing. Any guidance will be appreciated. Thank you.

First thing, contact Alley Cat Allies.  They do not have grants but they have a wealth of info.  (www.alleycat.org)

Do an Internet search for "TNR grants" and see what comes up in your area.  One thing you will need is a non-profit organization to apply.  Most foundations will not give funds to individuals.  You can also look into sites like Go Fund Me.

Have you spoken to your city officials?  They may be able to apply as well.  A cooperative effort is the best approach, as everyone is on the same page.

In a town near me, the volunteers were doing TNR and had fixed and vaccinated almost 100 cats.  Then the city's Animal Control decided he didn't like it and started re-trapping the cats and taking them to be put down!  There were several meetings with the chief of police and mayor but the ACO would not back down.

In my town, city officials actually initiated the process and the ACO is thrilled.  He can now spend his time attending to more serious problems (like dog fighting and backyard breeding).  He realized quickly that the TNR approach makes so much sense.

Yes, do all you can to get the whole community on board. Nothing worse than working hard to help the cats and then have someone come along and start killing them :(. Solicit donations, ask local vets for quantity discounts, get everyone involved.

Hello Ondine,  I think our Second Chance Animal Rescue has come up with an idea to better serve our community with the TNR.  As I said before we live in a very rural community but Austin Tx is only a hour and a half away.  We have a grant writer in our society and wonder if the Cat Site has a list of organizations that we can write to for a transporting vehicle.  The plan is we would have volunteers once a month to transport our stray cats that would be neutered or spayed.  Austin Humane society keeps kittens and we would bring back the rest of the fixed cats.  They would live their lives out as feral but the wouldn't breed.  That is our ultimate goal.  They are fed by the community but there are too many to adopt once they get a certain age.  Our monies would be put to insurance, gas and one meal to the volunteer.  We are planning for once a month at the beginning of this early plan.  Any info would help thank you all for your time.  ck75 :)

I know PetSmart and Petco give grants but my experience has been that PetSmart wants to pay for the surgeries and Petco's grants are not enough to buy a van.

Is there a local group (like Kiwanis or Lions Club) who might donate use of a van once a month/week?  Even a car dealer might be interested for the publicity.

Your plan to S/N the adults is an excellent.  As long as there are dedicated people who will provide food and shelter, this sounds like a winner!
