Hi, my name is Alan, and my dad today has officially let me get a kitten. I am getting an American Shorthair :D. So I did my research and since I will be getting one that is old enough to eat solids, I was wondering what the best food there is to start him out on? Canned? Kibbles? What is the best for a very young kitten probably 10 weeks of age? I am assuming a good mix of half and half will be right. So is that what I should do? Answer from experience please!

First off, Congratulations on being a new pet parent!

Well, unless you have decided to make the food yourself, i would highly recommend Orijen or Acana. My cats totally love it.

Please stay away from brands such as Friskies, Smartheart, Fancy feast, etc. These are very unhealthy for them.

As for wet food, I would strongly suggest Applaws since they are chunks of meat in broth without any gelling agents.

I also agree with feeding Orijen! However every cat is different and this food may or may not be right for your kitty!

As far as wet food, do some reading as there are a ton of wet food options! I personally feed grain free, mostly turkey, chicken, rabbit, and some lamb. My cat loves, Halo, Wellness, Weruva, and Simply Norish. There a bunch of great articles about food on this website, just check them out under "articles"

Best of luck! :)

Adding that if you are in the US, the Applaws food available is a supplement food only. Feed it as a treat, not as the only food.

Catinfo.org is a good place to learn more about cat nutrition. The "best" brand to feed is the one your cat will eat and you can afford
I disagree with Sharon87 about Friskies, etc being unhealthy. There are certainly better higher quality brands than these but for some people these are the only brands their cat will eat or they can find in the local stores or can afford. Don't feel bad if you have to feed these or similar brands.

Ideally feed a brand that is grain-free. I like Nature's Variety Instinct and Weruva. Other good brands are Wellness, Merrick, Blue Buffalo, By Nature. Take a look at what the pet stores in your area carry, both the chain stores and the independent stores.
