I got home from work when I went upstairs I found one of my cats throwing up under the ottoman.  This was at 5PM and he had last been fed at 7 AM.  What freaked me out was that the food looked as though it just came out of the can, not digested - at all.  Then he went to walk and he wobbled and collapsed on the floor in a heap and did not look good at all.  I got out a can of food (this cat lives to eat) and he didn't even move off the floor.  He did move when he saw me come back with the carrier but his gait was very wobbly as he tried to take refuge under the bed.

He's now at the emergency vet overnight.  His blood work was OK, but his urine was very concentrated.  She also said she could hear a heart murmur, but wasn't sure this was because he was stressed.   He's only eaten wet food since last January when I took him in.

I also took him to the vet a few weeks ago for bad breath (it was really bad) and she gave him an antibiotic shot.  His breath improved after that so I was relieved.

So has anyone seen symptoms like this?

Does your cat have kidney disease? It's very common. If your cat has kidney disease there are things you can do (my two senior cats have it), but first you have to know what you're dealing with. The concentrated urine suggests a UTI and/or kidney problem.

I wonder if it could be that if only because  he's only 2 years old - looking at his litter, he must've peed just before he threw up - so that's why his urine is so concentrated - he must be dehydrated.  They have him on an IV now, (they were shaving his little paw when I went in to say goodnight   He looked at me like "don't leave me here!"  He's such a good cat, not a mean bone in his body and he's built like a little linebacker.  I'm really surprised/scared that he's not feeling well.

I hope your cat is doing better this morning, Reba, and they're able to figure out what went wrong.

Hi Reba, I just saw your post and here are my thoughts. Yes kidney issues could effect this but I doubt that's the problem since it would have shown in the blood test and at 2 years old the percentage is low for that disease. The fact that the food looks undigested after 8 hours is very very odd. Either he just happened to find food somewhere so it was really a few minutes or I am thinking he has a blockage where the food never got to the stomach. It would have come up digested after that length of time. Did the vets take an X-ray? That's usually the first thing they do in these cases. It would show a blockage. Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

Hi Everyone and thanks for your input and well wishes.  He is much better.  Eating now, but he must be able to taste the Metrodiazon(however you spell it) because he left food in his dish.  Surprised me because it was mixed up in quite a bit of food.  He still hasn't pooped yet though.  I talked to the regular vet and she said that as long as he isn't vomiting she's OK with him not pooping for a few days.  Fingers crossed!

Hi Reba, Just saw this, is it Brutus?

Yes, metronidazole tastes terrible, VERY hard to hide that flavor! Put a dot on your finger and you will surely find out why he leaves food in the dish! eeooo...

Anytime I've had to treat a cat or kitten with it, oh the drama, you'd think I poured dish soap down their throat! Spitting, gagging, foaming, you name it. Haha jeez...

Hi Catwoman.  No it's his Daddy cat.  I did just dig some poop out of his litter box.  So he's not blocked.  His appetite isn't quite what it was.  I can't figure out what would have made him so sick.  He ate part of a mouse a few weeks ago.

He didn't sound blocked really. The food just sat in his tummy rather than go through the digestion process is why it looked whole.

I've seen it before, but have no reason behind why, just that if a cat might have an upset tummy, almost like indigestion in people, that food sits there and does nothing, unless of course it either comes up, which is usually the case, or begins to slowly digest, and slowly just as it would in a person. You know have you ever ate something that really didn't agree with you, and it sat there making you fell miserable?

I bet it was a random incident, but you know all the right signs to watch for in case it's not and there's a problem.

A few weeks ago mouse is old news....  Sounds like an outdoor cat I take it?   Maybe got into something outdoors not quite healthy.

No he's done his time outdoors as a stray - never again. I'm sorry to say I have mice in my house, or maybe not for long.  He caught another one last week, but when I got upstairs the commotion was over and he had it pinned by the tail.  Poor mouse.  Anyway, he was so nochalant about it it got free and ran under a piece of furniture he couldn't get under.  I didn't see it after that.

Oh thank you for that information.  I just couldn't figure out how it could sit in his stomach.   It's funny, Brutus would eat all his compounded Metro. without a problem.  Maybe they made it a lot more diluted than this stufff.

Hi I know this is not on topic of your furbaby. But I wanted to let you know how you can help her with your mouse issue without having to worry about having poisons in your home. You can take and put out some pennutbutter and some coke or Pepsi around it and it will kill them. Mice cannot pass air from eather end and that is why this will kill them without having to have poisons and it's almost instant. So virtualy no wondering where it is at. I hope this helps. I hope your furbaby states feeling better very very soon.

Can you describe this better please? I never heard of it. Are you saying put a teaspoon of peanutbutter on a plate and pour coke all around it?

You can use just about anything that will hold a little liquid. My grandmother would use a mayo jar lid after it was washed out. I have used a disposable pie plate. About a tablespoon or so in the center with the coke poured a round it like a motto works well. Placed in places that they like best in cabinets and under sinks. Sorry I didn't go into much detail before. I normally don't measure much just throw things together. Lol

Interesting, hadn't heard of that before.  It's not pleasant to think about for the mouse, but I suppose dying at the hands of a well fed feline is a pretty horrible way to go.

He's much better.  Back to sleeping in his "I'm so happy I live in a house again" poses.  The upside down thing always kills me, sometimes he sleeps on his back with his whole tummy exposed and his head upsidedown:
