Just got home from my kitten Loki's, first vet visit. He is only 6 weeks old. Not to sure why the women who had him gave him to me so early but either way I'm going to take care of him. I haven't even had him for a week yet and last night he started getting yellowish/mushy diarreah. The vet suggested wet food for him and also gave him Nemex deworming pill. They are also doing a feces culture that i won't know the results of until tomorrow at some point and if additional medicine is needed then I'll get that. His attitude, energy and appetite has not change at all and the vet says he's healthy and his temp was normal. I'm just wondering when the diarreah will subside and how long it takes for the deworming pill to work if that's what the problem is. He's still so little and doesn't fully clean himself down there yet so it's still up to me. And i work full time so it's hard. I'm such a paranoid parent. Thanks for the help!

Congratulations on your new kitty! Aww, Loki is so very little, he's really still a baby!  If you're going to be working long hours and no one is home, I am not sure how this situation will work out for you. Young kittens are like human toddlers. They will need multiple feedings, at least 4 small meals for him throughout the day and be in a kitten-proof environment. He will also miss a lot of the socialization skills since he was weaned so early from his mother and littermates, and that can cause a lot of issues down the road for you if he's the only kitty in your home. Do you think you could get another kitten? I know it sounds counterintuitive, but having another, perhaps older kitty to teach and groom him may be more help to you right now.

In the meantime, I hope the dewormer works and his stools become regular soon. When my two got their dewomer, it worked immediately, but there was another dose given a few weeks later since the meds only kill the adult worms and not its eggs. The fecal could come out positive for other things too, so this why it's important to leave a fresh stool sample.

It's common to have a lot of accidents at his age and for him to be a bit unkept; but that will put you to more tasks on your end since you're taking over his "mom" role now. Since he is such a teeny kitten, I'd place him in a small bathroom for the time being and make that his "safe room" while you are out working. Leave his dish with wet food, a water bowl,  and a cardboard box with a snuggly blanket or towel inside for him to act as his bed, and a low litter box in there for him that is safe for kittens (probably not clumping clay at this point--kittens tend to ingest it sometimes, and it can cause an obstruction!) If you like, you can also leave a radio on in there with some easy listening music or classical music to help him to relax, or a ticking clock so that replicates his mother's heartbeat and put Loki more at ease while you're gone. You can also add toys, but the best time for play would be interactive wand or laser toys with him after you get home. Kittens would need several play sessons a day, ideally, another reason why another young cat may be a good idea for you. All suggestions, of course, but it can really put your mind at ease knowing they will keep the other busy while you're gone.

Hope others have more ideas for you, good luck!

Luckily my little guy is doing very well for his age. Other than the diarreah of course. The women was already feeding him dry food when I got him. I just bought him some wet food and KRM. I also bought some pedialyte for his diarreah. He's doing fine except for the fact that he hasn't fully been able to clean himself after going to the bathroom so we've been giving him a few baths a day. I do work a full time job but for the next week my boyfriend will be home until he has to go back to work. He works out of state. But i like your idea of keeping him in one room during the day when I'm at work. I think that's going to be the best thing for him if he's still got diarreah at that point. I'm still waiting to hear from the vet about his culture too.

Thank you for all your advice! :)
