I work in regulatory, so I saw this warning letter posted to the FDA website.

http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/ucm428841.htm

The Nestle Purina PetCare division was inspected by the FDA and their problems were bad enough that the FDA released the issues in a public warning letter. This post is not meant to say we should all ban Purina products. Rather, its good to keep ourselves educated on the issues that different manufacturers may have & make individual decisions based upon that. These types of issues don't always become really publicly acknowledged.

Hehe, ok. Basically, there have been inconsistencies in the manufacturing of the dog and cat food at this plant in PA. Inconsistencies between batches included different process times, different temperatures & times for sterilization, sizes of pouches & such. At times, temperatures were lower than Purina required for sterilization, but they deemed it ok.

Also, they didn't sanitize cooling water as necessary, some records were not signed by appropriate personnel & thermometers were missing in some places.

The FDA was worried that these inconsistencies meant the product was not correctly sanitized. They cited them at the original visit (Sept to Oct 2014), Purina responded & the FDA is still not satisfied that their prevention plan will actually address the issues & prevent it from happening again. When that happens, the FDA issues it as a public warning letter.

Great , thank you for explaining .. Food sure is a scary issue . For people and pets ..  I hope Purina fixes it ..  I can't afford to have any problems with Fancy Feast . It is all my cats will eat for wet food  plus most other brands are too expensive anyway ..

Seems like there's a risk of botulism or food contamination from these plants that are not using the right protocols regarding safety in canning or packaging these pet foods. Sounds like Nestle Purina has been cutting corners on a lot of issues, which brings up red flags for those of us that feed our animals which are processed by these corporations/big manufacturers. Though I personally never use pet food products produced by Nestle/Purina, it makes me wonder how well in sanitation practices they keep up with human-grade products, too?
Yes, makes me a bit uneasy and paranoid...something to think about!

Fancy Feast is made by Nestle Purina, and actually not a quality food.  Look at the ingredient list ONLINE.
