Difference between Weruva and Weruva Truluxe?

My cats like Paw Lickin' Chicken. I was looking at the Weruva Truluxe on Chewy.com. Do you know the difference? I looked at the ingredients but maybe I am missing/overlooked something. Thank you.

It looks like five of the original varieties (no change in ingredients) were moved to the TruLuxe line with a few new varieties. TruLuxe also costs more.Other than that, I don't see any difference. Both lines are grain and carrageenan free.

Yes, @LTS3 has it exactly right.

With the price increases, I'm very glad our cats preferred Cats in the Kitchen in the first place! I do occasionally get a small can of Quick 'n Quirky (or some such name), which doesn't have potato, as a variety meal. The cats like it but I think you get more for your money with Tiki Cat than TruLuxe. Fortunately, the cats agree!

Since my Molly seems to be able to tolerate chicken (both cats were diagnosed with a chicken allergy several years ago), I decided to try Tiki Cat Gourmet Carnivore chicken as well Weruva Truluxe.  The TC chicken and duck (which I tried a couple months ago, introduced gradually), gave her a funny tummy / digestive upset. I also tried Weruva's Quirky Turkey and not much luck either.

I wasn't thrilled with the guar gum in Quirky Turkey.  TC Gourmet Carnivore is gum free. Interestingly, I've been using in her rotation this past week Peking Ducken and she's fine with this - no guar gum, I don't like xanthan (or potato starch) either but using this along with her freeze dried raw rotation, she likes it and no digestive problems; maybe the pumpkin in the food helps as well as the lack of guar gum.

It is pricey but I'll definitely keep some Peking Ducken cans for her.  I also read that TC's GC line - the chicken and duck, chicken and turkey, only contain 5% of turkey / duck.  I'm going to find out from Weruva how much of the second protein they are using in their Truluxe.

I'm glad that food works for Molly! I wish it didn't have potato: I seem to remember Ireland especially liking Peking Ducken, though that was before it became Truluxe with the deluxe prices!

I wonder if the olive oil in the Tiki bothered Molly. Their Gourmet Carnivore foods occasionally make Edwina a little gassy, though that could also be because some of them have liver, which is pretty rich. (She's always been a gassy cat: getting rid of potato has improved that a lot, though.) The cats have kind of cooled on Tiki in general (unless it's served with Pure Bites, ah cats!) so I'm rethinking their rotation... and, of course, still considering homemade.

Have you tried the Soulistic line from Petco? It is made by Weruva but my cats actually prefer it to the Weruva. They like the Good Karma (shredded white meat chicken in a broth like gravy) and Harvest Sunrise which is Good Karma with bits of pumpkin in it.

Interesting, yes I too thought the olive oil. Weruva uses sunflower oil, which may not be much better than olive oil since cats don't digest plant oils well, however, so far she's okay with it.

I'm a bit confused - I pulled up several sites of Weruva's PD and the original (which is cheaper), on some sites contain both peas and carrots which I don't want, while yet another site has the original w/o the carrots / peas, pretty much the same recipe as Truluxe PD.

Chewy's doesn't even sell the original Peking Ducken only the Truluxe. I would definitely save myself a few dollars if I can find the original PD w/o the veggies.

I realize the potato starch makes it a bit carby, however, I like that there are no veggies. Plus Molly has been a bit fussy but I see that she really craves variety. If I can keep some PD, along with the home-cooked / U-Stew which she really likes, plus a little FD raw, b/t those three things, that seems to be working, at least for now.

Since she lost weight on Primal's pork and beef & salmon, I don't mind the potato starch calories, as long as it doesn't cause her digestive upset.

For about two weeks I included in her rotation Pride (NV) duck and turkey, wowser -- horribly stinky and loose stools, all those veggies and super carby. She likes Pride but I don't like what it does to her stomach so I'll just keep it simple.  She has picked up some weight, duck is a fattier meat.  I think TC is lower calorie than Weruva, from what I've read. And in comparison to TC GC and Weruva Truluxe, I see a lot more meat in Weruva than TC.

Have you tried the Soulistic line from Petco? It is made by Weruva but my cats actually prefer it to the Weruva. They like the Good Karma (shredded white meat chicken in a broth like gravy) and Harvest Sunrise which is Good Karma with bits of pumpkin in it.

Thanks, not yet I haven't tried those two since I'm cautiously reintroducing chicken. I realize Soulistic is made by Weruva and is also human grade meat so I may try either of those at some point, esp since both are guar gum free.

It looks like xanthan gum is 6th on the list of Soulistic while on Peking Ducken it's 8th.

I'm really picky about those gums, would prefer to avoid xanthan altogether.

 And in comparison to TC GC and Weruva Truluxe, I see a lot more meat in Weruva than TC.

A lot of the Gourmet Carnivore foods look like there's not much meat but if you look at the moisture levels, which are what's really most important, Weruva's Truluxe Peking Ducken is 84.9% moisture and the highest moisture content for all Tiki's cat foods is 83%, for tuna. (The highest for meat-only foods is 80%, not surprisingly the chicken/duck and chicken/turkey.) I first learned this because I was curious about the really soupy GC foods, with liver, which are a little lower, probably because the liver is so dense!

I mention that just because I think it's interesting, not because I'm trying to convince you of anything: the big thing with cats is finding what they'll eat and what keeps them healthy!


Oh and not long after I mentioned that the cats were going meh on GC... I served up some chicken and liver and they lapped it up, just like old times. Go figure!

It is pricey but I'll definitely keep some Peking Ducken cans for her.  I also read that TC's GC line - the chicken and duck, chicken and turkey, only contain 5% of turkey / duck.  I'm going to find out from Weruva how much of the second protein they are using in their Truluxe.

I found out the original PD was discontinued for the Truluxe PD.

It's harder to find than a lot of other brands. The big box stores like the pet twins co and smart don't carry it. You'd need to go to a specialty pet store or online retailers like Chewy.com, Wag.com and Amazon to find it. It's a good brand. Pricey but good.
