Hi guys

One-third (1/3) of my cats' diet is the whole, dressed quail (excluding feathers, stomach and intestine) from Hare Today. HT recently changed companies where they get their quail from so now the quail are coming without the feathers, stomach, intestine, head and feet. I really liked the concept of feeding them the entire bird with the brain and cartilage in the feet so I'm not going to be ordering the new quail and will be replacing that third of their diet with "frankenprey" items.

So I'm getting ready to place a big order from HT including chicken thighs, duck hearts, duck necks, duck liver and beef kidney. The main reason I'm getting the beef kidney is because HT doesn't offer any other types of kidney, spleen or other secreting organs aside from liver. I know I can go to my butcher and get good quality organs (and I will if necessary) but I wanted to ask you guys your opinion on the beef kidney, considering my circumstance...

My cat, Malibu, has a red meat intolerance and gets an upset tummy (and loose, smelly stool) when he eats red meat. So far he has reacted negatively to beef and lamb but does handle pork just fine (thank goodness!). Do you think he will be OK eating the correct proportion of beef kidney? It is only 5% of 1/3  of his diet. So if he eats approximately 25 ounces (total) a week, only 0.5 of an ounce will be the beef kidney. I feel like it's too small of an amount to make a real difference but I've also heard that if you feed a cat something that he has a sensitivity to along with another protein, he can become sensitive to the other protein too after some time, which I don't want to happen.

Should I just take the kidney out of the HT cart and pick up some pork kidney or spleen from my butcher? Or is it worth a go?

Thanks!!!

Personally I would get pork kidney from your butcher. I wouldn't take the chance.

You are right, of course! That's exactly what I'll do.

Thanks Cindy!
