Long story short - We took in 3 stray kittens and their mother back in August. Lenny had a punctured eye that had to be removed, but still having problems with his remaining eye. One vet said his pupil is closed and will probably go blind and gave me anti-viral drops and medication, no improvement and said she would refer me to OSU vet hospital. His regular vet said she put Atropine drops in and it opened a little in just a few minutes & sent me home with them, but I'm afraid to use them because I've read it can damage his eye more if it's not an ulcer. Mo's eye was a little cloudy and cleared up with L-Lyson and Jennie's eye has a light blue spot and small pupil but no vision problems.
The last few days after using Atropine drops Lenny seems to be running into stuff more. He's better when he's outside but it's been too cold to let them out much lately. He has no other symptom of sickness, plays, and eats. The vets are sure it's the Herpes virus, but never really say what's wrong with his eye and I'm sick of hearing "Try this". He's been on 2 different oral antibiotics, oral anti-viral, antibiotic ointment, and 3 different drops. I'm to the point of doing away with all the medication and just going with L-Lyson only for fear they are all giving me drops that will make it worse with being mis-diagnosed or not diagnosed at all. His 3rd eyelid has been up for about 3 weeks.

Hi Lenny1,

I'm so sorry to hear of your kitty's eye.

After reading your short excerpt, though, I think I'd see an animal eye specialist (animal ophthamologist), or ask your vet for a referral to one. If you also live close to a Vet University, that could be another option. Bring all test results from your current vet (ask them to print out all labwork/medical paperwork they have on Lenny), and seek another specialist.

Another thing, I'd make sure you don't take him outdoors anymore if it's unsupervised. Since Lenny has already lost one eye and his current eye is still giving him problems, I'd keep him indoors for safety reasons and keep all your furniture in the same spot! Blind cats can get around fine, but keeping things in the same spot will help Lenny learn to get around without bumping into things or getting injured.

Positive vibes to you and Lenny!
Would love to hear updates from you, too.
