If it's the very last ingredient, I would say it's a tiny amount and should be safe for cats. I have used Spot's Stew on rescue cats who were sensitivie to grain and they have done fine on it to date, but that was only two cats. I have also used it for kittens but only for a short time, and I'[m not sure what they were fed after they were adopted although I did tell the new families they had been eating Spots Stew. None of those cats had any bad reaction to Spot's Stew, so I dont think the tiny bit of garlic was really a problem.
I've come back to this because I have been reading more about cat toxins, and garlic keeps popping up as one of the most toxic substances for cats. In fact one site said to never add garlic powder to your cat's food. So, I am basically feeding one of my cats (that eats Halo) poison everyday? I hope not.
Garlic is toxic to cats, it causes a type of anemia that resolves after the garlic is removed from their system. Wellness used to put garlic in their food in small quantities and this came up a lot in the forums. Some people, myself included continued to feed Wellness, others didn't because of the garlic. My kitties ate Wellness exclusively for some time when it still had garlic in it and they were fine. From what I understand though from earlier discussions is that kitties have different tolerances for garlic so my kitties having no issues doesn't mean that no kitty ever would.
Small amounts of garlic are fine for both cats and dogs. Garlic helps with heart and immune system health. Read The Whole Pet Diet by Andi Brown, she has a whole page on garlic.
The concern is that too much will cause anemia in cats.
When I cook for my pets I regularly add a bit of garlic, as does my vet for her cats and dogs.
