I have expressed my frustration in other threads about trying to find a canned food for my VERY PICKY cat with IBD that:

A) She will actually like and eat.
B) does not have any of the ingredients that
she should not have
C) will not be vomited back up

My past successes have turned into failures when she has either stopped liking the food (or foods), or they have started making her sick.

On Friday afternoon, I decided to browse through Petco, and I picked up a variety of canned foods that might be promising, EVEN the pâté ones, which she does not usually like. To my amazement, she actually decided to be somewhat cooperative and at least try every food that was offered to her. I know that this could have gone horribly wrong, having her try so many new things at once, but there was no vomiting! She has actually eaten AND kept down a WHOLE can of each of these foods this weekend: Halo Spot's Stew (both the chicken and the lamb), Wellness Divine Duos (chicken and duck), and Instinct Pride Trickster's Tuna. To my disappointment, they did not have either of the Pride duck varieties. I really wanted to try those. I also bought her a can of the Rockstar Rabbit but I have not offered it to her yet. I'm a little nervous about feeding her rabbit. I know that tuna is not good to have often, but she did really like it. I was really shocked that she liked the Halo lamb and that she did not have a bad reaction to it, since she had never tried lamb before. She did leave about 4 peas on the plate, but that was it. My goal is to maybe find 3-4 foods that she really likes and that are easy on her stomach and feed them to her in a rotation. I am hoping that this will keep her interested, so that she will not get tired of the food and completely stop eating them, like she has done previously with other foods.

What do you think about the foods that I mentioned above? Could any of them be potentially bad? Do you have any other suggestions for grain-free foods that are free of corn, wheat, soy, carrageenan, etc.?

I have had good luck with Spot's Stew for quite a few rescue cats.  It totally cleared up allergies that 6-year-old brothers had in which they itched a lot, particularly their ears, and when they came to us one had even caused a hematoma so bad as to turn one ear into a cauliflower ear (long before we got them).  The inside of the ear was hot and inflamed, and I put them on grain free Spot's Stew and their ers cleared up within a week, and they were also starting to bring their weight down as both were quite obese.  I've also liked Wellness for my personal cats, mainly the old and toothless ones, as it is very soft and easy to get down.  A little tuna will not hurt, and althugh I don't know the brand you used, if you have an IBD cat, you are a success when you can find something that meets the qualifications you so clearly stated above.  I actually referred someone to your thread just now in hopes he will try some of those foods for his cat and his cat will like them.  Thanks for sharing your success!

I just started using Holistic Select Turkey 5 days ago and it has gone well so far.    Its made by the same company that makes Wellness and doesnt have carrageenan.   It comes in 4 or 5 other flavors also.

You might want to try Nutru Natural Choice chunky chicken or Turkey.  Be careful which one you get because some of them do have careeganan but the chunky chicken or turkey do not . It's a pate, no veggies.  Its a great food.

You are lucky your cat likes Halo, it is supposed to be the perfect food. My girl won't touch it, I tried multiple times. I do feed Pride rockstar rabbit (it is the best selling flavor), Devine duos duck/chicken, nutro natural choice chunky chicken loaf, tiki cat puka luau, natural balance catatouille stew and Merrick duck or chicken Pate (does have carageenan but good in rotation - well liked no vomiting) and I even rotate fancy feast classic liver & chicken or classic chopped grill to keep prices down. Believe me when I tell you I tried most foods on the market and these are the winners. My cat used to have vomiting problems but no more. I think giving her 95% grain free and fish free canned has solved the problem , and yes I can even offer her a teeny tiny bit of high grade kibble as a treat at bedtime and still no vomiting. She adores kibble so instead of temptation (which is bad). I give her a few bits of orijen red or basic instinct duck kibble, only 10 bits. A small 5 lb bag lasts a year and I have two cats. I feed it when I furminate them, it keeps them still.

A whole year! I can't get my cats completely off kibble. When they are both eating it (one of them changes her mind about what she likes a lot), a 5 lb bag lasts me about 3 weeks. My male kitty won't eat a whole lot of canned (except for tuna and salmon--Ugh!). He prefers dry.

My female kitty (subject of my post) has officially eaten and kept down five whole cans of Halo Spot's Stew Lamb since Friday, so maybe it's a keeper (until she changes her mind again)!

Even though she ate a whole container of Wellness Divine Duos chicken and duck a couple of days ago, she only took a few bites of it today. Go figure.

Both of them seem to like the Pride Trickster's Tuna. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Merrick was not a keeper.

Thanks to everyone for the food advice!

This is a wonderful start!! You have chosen some foods that my finicky eaters love (they tolerate the Spot's Stew. Sometimes.
) Petco used to carry the daredevil's duck (Pride by Instinct) but no longer do. Petsmart has it. My girls LOVE it. Lilith adores the Wellness Divine Duos chicken and duck and chicken and turkey. Sophie likes it but not as much as her sister. Sophie's favorite is the Soulistic from Petco. The Good Karma (chicken breast shreds in a broth like gravy and Harvest Sunrise (Good Karma with bits of pumpkin).

I hadn't thought about checking at Petsmart for the Pride duck. I always stop at Petco for everything because they usually seem to have a wider selection of food--until now. I'll have to stop at Petsmart after work tomorrow and look for it. A Petco employee told me today that they are going to "reset" their stock next week--whatever that means--and that they might get some more in. I think he had no clue though.

If the tuna is a winner, maybe you could mix some with the lesser liked goods to entice her to eat? Just a thought. Glad kitty is enjoying (and doing well on!!) the new selections. :)

I have always passed up lamb because I don't like it and neither do the dogs. I don't like the smell of it. Maybe I will try a can of lamb something, maybe the cats would eat it.

Wow I am very surprised she did not like Merrick chicken or duck Pate, mine inhale it. It is in the top 3 favorites and low carb and very reasonable. Spots probably better no carageenan. Mine sniff that and walk away doing the quivery tail. I gave Spots to friend and her fancy feast junkie would not eat it. It went to Humane society.

A reset usually involves moving things to new locations on the shelves and, often/sometimes, adding or removing items in the process. In the case of our Petco, a recent reset meant they stopped selling one of the Nutro Natural Choice foods our cats like. The employee told me it just hadn't sold well so they got rid of it. FWIW, our Petco doesn't sell much of the Pride line, I think it's just a rabbit variety.

In any case I'm glad your cat has been keeping some food down!

Thanks!

I did stop at Petsmart today, and they had no Pride products whatsoever! In fact, the shelves where all of the Nature's Variety products were supposed to be were mostly bare--just a couple of bags of the dry food. I don't know if this means that they sold out or they stopped stocking it because it isn't popular.

Bonepicker, the only Merrick foods that I tried were Thanksgiving...something and Turducken. One cat sniffed it and walked away. The other sniffed it and scratched around it like she was trying to cover up poop in her litter box.

I think that the only protein I have not tried yet is venison. I might see if I can get some, while my picky cat is willing to try new things. Does anybody know what brands of food contain venison?

The "sliced" turkey. After that I started a Chewy.com autoship of Nutro... I like shopping at local stores but the cats eat Nutro every night and love it so I have to be sure I have a steady supply!

Nature's Variety Instinct has venison. Our cats liked it okay but weren't enthused enough to buy it again... they're not really into the NVI foods.

The Nutro sliced turkey and minced chicken are big hits in my house, too.

@Tabbysia  - Nature's Variety has venison. I find it at Petco for $1.99 for a 3 ounce can.
