I want to piggyback on this thread as to not open one back up.  I feed my kitten Blue Buffalo. 1 can a day. Should I feed him more? Is there a better brand? Thanks.

Kittens in general should be fed as much as they want. They need all that food for their growing bodies. Several small meals daily is usually best. How big is the Blue Buffalo can? A 5.5 oz can every day may or may not be enough. Does your kitten meow for more food in between meal times? Adjust the amount of food if needed. There's no one answer as to how much to feed since every kitten is different

Blue Buffalo is good. There are many others that are also good. You can try them if you like. The most important thing is that your kitten will eat it. You don't really need a kitten specific formula.

There are many higher quality foods that are grain free or corn meal free, a really good option is to switch to a canned food :)

Thanks everyone who replied. Been reading some of the pther threads and it seems a can only diet is best.

I currently only giving my cats dry food as a supplement to their canned food diet. So i guess i should stop dry food completely?

I am giving the kitten blue buffalo chicken flavor canned food. After reading last night he didnt get any dry food today. But just want tp double check. Thanks all.

If you are not open to a raw or homemade diet than my recommendation would be Hound and Gatos canned food.  There are many good websites to reference for reviews but the latest and greatest information comes from Susan Thixton over at truthaboutpetfood.  This was the only canned cat food brand which was listed on her recommended list for 2015.  Unfortunately for the consumer the supply is not keeping up with the demand for this brand and for good reason.  Take a hard look at the quality control measures for this food, its mighty impressive.
Code:
Hound and Gatos Pet Foods manufactures a simple high quality complete and balanced pet food. Simple only in that this pet food is meat and only meat - plus supplements to balance the diet. All meats are USDA inspected and approved. Recently consumers experienced shortages of H & G pet food on store shelves. This shortage led to a discovery that separates this company from many others. The manufacturer told me he struggled to find quality meat sources in the U.S. (or from proved safe country of origin) and refused to purchase imported meat. "ONLY 3% of all imports are inspected by the USDA. That leaves 77% wide open that could be dangerous." This company chose to waive sales and wait until quality meat sourcing was found. Hound & Gatos Pet Foods tests the DNA of pet food batches. Especially in light of recent studies proving some pet foods do not contain the animal proteins stated on the label, this special effort by this company gives consumers assurance they are buying what the label states. 1. All meats are USDA inspected and approved. 2. This company produces a minimal ingredient pet food; perfect for pets with allergies and/or other health issues. 3. Foods are carrageenan free. Effective December 2014, the company will remove all gums from their products. 4. Pet foods are manufactured at Performance Pet - the owner of Hound and Gatos is present at the plant for every batch made.
There are some proteins currently available but others are hit or miss.  Rabbit has virtually dried up and for those owners who have their loves ones with IBD its unfortunate.  I currently have an IBD kitty and had to switch over to Addiction Rabbit and Blueberries but unfortunately I just learned that Addiction may have flipped to one of the big private brand labels but I can not 100% confirm this.  Addiction Rabbit is also drying up which may reflect the switch but again I can not 100% confirm this.

Anyway I just thought I would throw this bit of information out for those looking for a good food source.

Wow, no carrageenan and no gums! It's too bad that some kitties don't like H&G. There seem to be several members who have said their kitties refused the food. But I think that if the product has no gums owners might want to try enticing with toppers if there's no interest at first.

I think H&G is just a love it or hate it food. Our cats tolerated it for a while, though only the flavors with lamb and chicken, but now they'll only eat about half a can of lamb, if that. They are not easily fooled by toppers or mix-ins! I'm phasing them out. Or might keep a can or two on hand for occasional variety. I wish the cats liked them because they're good foods (they do have gums, though) and the price is reasonable.

So glad to hear they're removing the gums!  I'm tired of picking blobs and strings of gooey stuff out of the H&G.  It's not a quick process and the cats circle around yelling at me to hurry up!  Woe betide she who keeps the feline overlords waiting

My recent order, received a week ago, still had the gums  The pet food retailers must be moving older inventory before shipping out the new stuff.  Still waiting impatiently for rabbit to be restocked.  We've had to make do with NV Instinct (IBD cat) and Instinct Pride Rockstar Rabbit for the other kitties, who aren't complaining at all.  I know which I prefer, though.

Oops, I missed that about the gums. I wonder if (and hope!) maybe our cats will like the food better without that stuff... I've always thought it might be the (rather gelatinous) texture they don't like. I'll have to watch for a fresh batch at our store, too.

I had no idea what was in the Iams cat food I'd been feeding my cats until I actually read the ingredients. After doing some more research I decided to try Wellness Grain-free Indoor Formula (for dry) and a few cans of Wellness grain-free wet food. With all the information and all the different brands out there I was getting a headache trying to decide so I'm going to try these for now.

However, I have discovered a lot of articles concerning the Wellness dry cat food and urinary crystals. In light of these articles I may just switch my kidlets over to the Wellness canned food only.

The cats won't touch the Wellness canned food. I tried crushing up some of the Iams on the Wellness wet food, but they wouldn't touch it. I have no idea. So how long will cats go without eating before they get hungry enough to eat what you bought them? Wasting a lot of money here trying to figure this stupid cat food thing out and I'm not going to keep buying more.

It is very frustrating , I know . My cats are super picky with wet food . Have you tried Fancy Feast Classic ?  This is the one and only wet food my cats will eat .

Fancy Feast is one of the bad cat foods, but I have tried that in the past and they didn't like that, either. I got Wellness "pate" in the cans, so I'm going to try Wellness chunks or slices next time.

Actually Fancy Feast is not all bad .  It is grain free , low carb , high meat content .  I would rather have my cats eat Fancy Feast than no wet food at all ..

Hopefully you can find something your cats like .

I agree about FF. It's also one of those foods that most cats seem to like. My cats don't like Wellness or Halo. They do like the Merrick pates but nothing else from them. They all love the Soulistic Good Karma and Harvest Sunrise, Nutro Natural Choice minced chicken and sliced turkey and the girls LOVE Pride by Instinct Rockstar's Rabbit. Henry not so much.

Then the law has been laid down

I think FF gets a bad rap that it really doesn't deserve.

Coupons.com has a coupon right now for $3.50 off 25 single cans of FF at Target. I was in there yesterday and they were running a deal. buy 15 cans and get 1 free I think

I think instead of buying more Wellness I'll have to try those brands you mentioned. Thanks.
