Hi all.  My cat ran away several weeks ago and returned with a broken leg, badly broken.  needed surgery or amputation.  He had surgery to repair-- a plate, screws, wire were all used.  Surgeon Vet said it was really bad, she even considered amputation once she started working on him.  anyway, I brought him in for a checkup yesterday and the surgeon wanted to do xrays because of the way he is holding the leg.  He sort of holds it out to the side at this point.  She said the xray looked good, she said everything was in place.  She said the leg will probably be a bit splayed (out to the side) once fully healed.  I'm just concerned as to how much it will be splayed.  Also concerned that he still isn't putting much weight on the leg.  Anyone been through this?  How was the outcome?  We've been super careful with his aftercare, giving him lots of love, but crate confinement so he heals and doesn't damage the repair.  He is a little over three weeks post op at this point.

Would love to hear similar stories and how it all turned out.  I feel like I'm the only person on the planet going through this, it's been a heck of a December!  Just want kitty better and back to normal, well, a new normal.

Thanks!

Have you asked your veterinarian about physiotherapy? I know someone who's dog had major surgery on his back leg, and like your cat, he wouldn't put it down even though it had healed well. He found a clinic where he could take the dog swimming, and the dog regained use of his leg.
