I had been feeding a stray cat around my house for a couple of weeks. My parents decided they would take the cat as the had been wanting one for a while. My mom came yesterday to pick him up. I had him inside and had combed him and put flea med on. He is such a sweet boy and loves to be held and scratched. A big purr-er!. She too him to their home and said he went all through the house inspecting everything, ate, sat in my mom's lap, etc. They decided to walk up to the mail box (they have a river home pretty far out of town). They thought the cat would go with them. When they opened the door, the cat took off up a big hill in the woods.  He hasn't come back as of this morning. They had put his food and bedding outside in a wooden cabinet-like structure, as they had not yet gotten an outdoor house and had planned on him sleeping indoors.  I don't know what to do.  He is so sweet and it drives me crazy thinking he is cold and scared. Mother said that he was going around the house like he "owned it" and seemed very comfortable and happy. Can anyone suggest a way of coaxing him back to his new home? I haven't slept all night.  Thanks.

How far away is your parents home from you?  The cat most likely is headed back to your place.  When you move a cat they need 3-4 weeks to adjust to their new surroundings before they should be let out to roam.  His instinct is to return to his previous home.  Please be on the look out for him if you are close by.

If the cat returns to your parents, they need to keep the cat inside for 3-4 weeks.  He also needs to get to a vet for vaccines, de worming as well as to check to be sure he has been neutered.

I am so sorry that they cat ran away and I so hope he returns safely.

Oh my!  They live about 10 miles from me.  Across the Elk River.  I don't know why they let him out so soon. I tried to explain that he needed time to adjust.  She said he was so comfortable that they never thought he would run away.  I don't know what to do but keep looking.  We never even got a chance to get to the vet. We had planned on doing that next week. They haven't even named him yet.  I am just sick with worry.  Thank you for commenting so quickly. If we do find him, I will make sure that they understand how long an adjustment period is. If I ever got a new cat, I always carry it in my arms and walk around the outside of our house several times a week for several weeks before letting it down. Even then, I am watching and waiting for it to get away from me. They are so upset. They have never had a cat.  It is just a bad situation that I cannot fix.  Just pray we find him and he is safe.  Again, thanks.
