Hello my cat experts. About 2 months ago I adopted a stray that showed up in the driveway SEVERELY ematiated. She's been to the vet before being introduced to the household, all tests for FIV, etc. came back negative, was dewormed and she did get her shots. I thought the diarrhea would pass in a few weeks with a good diet but she is still having daily diarrhea, sometimes the consistency of pudding. She will also vomit when she overeats (I guess she remembers being without). I have started giving her SEB once a day and a probiotic. Any other suggestions? I have 6 cats and if I can resolve this without a vet trip, my wallet would thank me. I do have Metrodozonale available. Any suggestions appreciated.

Absent any intestinal vermin it could also be that the food may have too high a fat content or too low in fiber. I had a kitten with this chronic problem and switched him to adult cat food with a lower fat content and he was fine thereafter. Not saying this is the problem with yours but it may be something to look into.

Thanks for your suggestions. I need to call the vet and verify about the stool sample analysis...I know that he did test for the FELV, etc and she was dewormed. If it is parasitic he'll need to confirm and I do have some antibiotics on hand. She is on a low fat, high protein diet and is getting a probiotic and slippery elm daily. I also discovered that despite the fact she hates any kind of canned food, she does like pumpkin (bizarre). Despite the diarrhea, she is gaining weight and is in no pain. She was PITIFUL when she showed up here...just bones do the shock of going from. NO food and water to abundant a of both could have messed with her system (in my opinion). Thanks for the suggestions.

My shelter cat, Ruby, had pudding-like diarrhea and semi-regular between meals clear liquid vomiting for the first 2 months I had her.  At that time she was eating a mix of wet and dry IAMS food.   Then the vet suggested a canned hypo-allergenic (duck) food, and her digestive issues went away.

As you have 6 cats, I'm sure it's harder to give your stray a special diet, but her digestive problems might be solved with a change of food.

Gook Luck! Mine bunch had a diarrhea issue around Thanksgiving time.  I took them to the vet. I took a stool sample in earlier in the day before my appointment.  Also I left a "poop journal" for her to review.  They called me to make sure they could run some of the more expensive stool studies, which I approved.  All studies were negative.  She asked if I had changed their diet or if there were any changes in our home.  No diet changes same brand/same protein. We have not had any animals in our home and 2 of our adult children came over for Thanksgiving dinner, but nothing changed in our household.  She gave them a probotic to try.  The diarrhea continued.  My husband and I finally sat down with our journal and pet food receipts.  We realized we bought the same brand/protein food, but we bought a new bag the day before this all started.  I ran to PetSmart that night and grabbed a little bag of food, same brand/different protein.  Diarrhea stopped.  We have now went back to the original protein and we are still all good.  The only thing we can think is we had a contaminated bag of food.  It was very frustrating.

All my cats, yes all 6, are on NV Instinct Rabbit (canned) and NV Limited rabbit kibble because one had suspect IBD due to allergies so I switched them all so by the time Callie showed up [#6] they were all on this diet. I color my own hair and do my own manicures/pedicures....they get a expensive, special diet. :). That's ok too. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Very much appreciated.

Your stray could have an issue with rabbit or one of the other ingredients in the NV Rabbit canned or NV Limited Ingredient Rabbitt kibble. Sometimes, it takes trial and error (food trials) to find a food that does not aggravate IBD. I'm not saying that your kitty has IBD. IBD is a possibility here.

My boy had a bad reaction to rabbit. He eats a duck formula. You may want to try a different novel protein. In addition, cats can have intolerances to many other ingredients in a food. This can cause vommiting and diarrhea. See:

Does your kitty vomit kibble (undigested) or canned food? My boy frequently vomits kibble, which is not an uncommon issue in cats. I'm working on getting him on canned only. Some cats eat too quickly, which can cause regurgitation as you mentioned.

The diet change to the NV Rabbit could have triggered the diarrhea. Something else, such as parasites, could be the culprit too. Diarrhea can cause dehydration, which can trigger bigger health problems. If you can't get it under control or resolved, I would recommend taking your kitty to the Vet. Keep your baby hydrated. Good luck. I hope you figure it out!
