First off let me say my cat has been deceased for many years but we never found out why he had such great health problems. His name was Phil and he was put to sleep at age 12.
We got him from my aunt and uncle at age two who were going to put him to sleep they didn't want him with his health issues. We never owned a cat before we took him in to save his life. All we were told is that he was declawed and he peed in a litterbox but pooped on a garbage bag, know I realize due to the declawing. They said only feed science diet dry food and water, that's it because he is overweight.
So that's what we did and the vet said that too. I realize right away we made a lot of mistakes but our vet was no good and never said why our cat was sick and we believed him Unfortunetly.
Our cat at his heaviest was 35 pounds. His food was mainly corn and a tiny bit of chicken by product. He had almost no energy, would try to eat plastic bags, had severe hairballs, severe constipation to the point he would go every 3 days dry as bone feces, would vomit multiple times a week, constantly got urinary tract infections and crystals with blood, trouble breathing, drank water constantly, and would always be hungry, and his fur was dull and greasy and shed chunks always and had bald spots. I know it's bad, but we as first time owners didn't know and I was a little kid. We were told catnip will hurt him so I never gave him it.
Oh yeah, he wore a flea collar his whole life per vets orders plus topical flea treatment. Never had a dental cleaning in his life either.
So no matter how little he ate he persisted in gaining weight. He was given laxatives for constipation which just made him vomit. In his life he had two seizures and the vets gave nothing just told us bring him home to rest. He had a gray cyst removed from the base of his tail that tested non cancerous. We ended putting him to sleep he literalky couldnt move anything but his head for 3 days and wouldn't eat the vet just said he's dying nothing we can do so we put him to sleep.
As a kid I didn't always listen. I used to give him chicken breast and canned food once in a while and he was the happiest cat, the canned food seemed to help him go poo easier too. I let him outside to sunbathe and eat grass once in a while he ate so much grass, probably to get the hairballs up and aid in softer stools.
My point is, I think he had hypothyroidism and changing to high quality diet without grains plus canned food plus thyroid meds probably would of fixed most of his issues. I feel SO bad he suffered but he taught me how to care for cats better so our two are very healthy we have now.
