I stumbled across here whilst I've been looking for some advice regarding the introduction of a new cat to the home. I think I might start another thread about the issues the kitty's are having, but I may as well introduce them here.
Crusty Babs is about 14 years old. I took in about 6 months ago after she was declared homeless. The cat rescue organisation checked her out for us and she had been chipped and lost 13 years ago, but her original keeper was now in residential care and not in a position to take her back. we believe she must have been looked after by someone in-between as she was in pretty good shape and used to people. She settled fairly quickly but its only in the last couple of months that she's fully been comfortable sitting on your lap for a cwtch. She's generally a very chilled cat who's happy to lay about all day with the occasional tour of the garden.
Randy Snowballs is about a year old and moved in about a month ago. He's had a difficult life prior to here - This is his 4th home and one of his previous keepers with neglectful and somewhat cruel. He's a handsome devil and although we've recently had him neutered he's taken a somewhat inappropriate fancy to my left arm. I've had a chat with him and explained that although he's a good looking kitteh who I love dearly, I just don't see him in quite the same way. This behaviour has however given him his name, prior to this everyone just called him Puss-puss.
I tried to follow all the good practice guides about introducing new cats to the home and there is a level of peace in the house, but Babs is a bit put out by the new arrival and for an older, smaller and generally weaker cat she stands her ground and gives Randy a bit of a hard time. She's been giving the occasional hiss and generally trying to make his life here a bit uncomfortable
To try and ease their tensions I got a Feliway defuser that's been plugged in for about 18 hours now. The trouble is that it seems to have raised tensions in the house with Babs being a lot harder than before and even taking a swing at Randy. To date Randy has taken all the grief off Babs pretty well and stayed out of her way with no retaliation but this morning I've heard him hiss a couple of times for the first time ever.
Should I throw the Feliway away and consider it a dud or give it a bit longer? I don't really particularly want to increase their stress or tensions but wondered if anyone else found that Feliway made tensions worse rather than better?
