I have a friend with an FIV cat, and when she told me "he's so hard to medicate" I thought "shoot, I'll just show her." Well, despite all of my years of shelter/feral/ etc cat medicating, this guy's the worst I've ever tried to give amoxi to. I've read about compounding pharmacies that can even create meds that can be rubbed into a cat's hear, but can't find any in our town in Ohio.

Does anyone have an internet source that provides this type of product?

Thanks in advance - my friend and her very strong FIV buddy thank you too.

Check with locally owned pharmacies several of them do it for you too. Even some of the bigger ones, but I've had better luck with smaller locally owned pharmacies. Just give them a call and see what they can do for you.

The last time I checked the only thing that was proven to actually absorb sucessfully through the skin of a cat is synthroid. The rest I have heard are hit or miss. I don't think it will work with antibiotics. My vet prescribed tramadol that way and it never seemed to work. Some "medicine shoppes" will do it. Not sure if you have those were you are. If you are looking to add chicken, beef or fish flavor to the amoxi the a local pharmacy can do that that has the pet flavoring. We have Publix supermarkets here in Florida and their pharmacy will flavor pet meds. You don't need a compounding pharmacy for that method. That's is just flavor additive.

Oh and if he needs antibiotics talk to vet about getting the shot for it instead. It's not as effective for some things as other meds, but its way easier to deal with. My Siamese gets that when he needs antibiotics because it's impossible to medicate him.  They also commonly use it for ferals that aren't touchable.

The problem with this guy is multiple: as an FIP kitty he needs meds often, and he's a real med hater - I know-what cat isn't right;) But he's a good 15-17 all muscle, and my friend is re homing him to her daughter- in-law, who is single. He can be given meds by two people with heavy "burritoing" and a lot of wasted Albon (and a lot of clean up afterwards), but even with my experience I'm not sure I could do it alone. And the daughter- in- law is inexperienced. I thought about antibiotic shots, but that would add up to a pretty big chunk of change since each one would mean a vet trip. I'd originally suggested to my friend she "hide" the amoxi in chicken baby food, which worked well, but gives the poor guy awful diarrhea. So I'll at least pass the suggestions (shots, local pharmacy, etc ) along---but if anyone else has any thoughts--//truly appreciate it!

The antibiotic shot is a 7 day shot, she'd only have to go in twice for it if they kitty didn't recover after the first 7 days. It works great!

I used Professional Arts Pharmacy in Baltimore, MD.  It is somewhat local to me (I live in MD) and they would ship the meds to me.  They have a toll free number and I'm guessing they will ship most anywhere in the US, but I don't know for sure.  Might be worth a call if you can't find anything closer.

I believe Walgreens will do this as long as they fill the prescription, but I haven't used them personally and so can't vouch for them.

What about pill pockets? Or you can wrap the medication with cheese?

I'm passing these ALL along (although I tried pill lockers when I was there and the look of disdain when I even presented....let alone tried to feed.....was almost priceless. We all burst out laughing....with an immediate look from Leo like "you actually think I'm eating THAT?" We both went into a fit of laughing!!

I 'll pass all these along --and any others that come along ------keep em coming!!!!!!

Some vets do it. I know the emergency vet near me (crappy as they are, don't get me started) has posters up saying they will flavor meds. So maybe try calling around to different vets and asking them? Try vet hospitals especially.
