I am in for a hot cup of coffee and to warm up a bit before heading back to the barn. Racer foundered this morning. I have had the vet out and he has gave Race a shot of bute, and left me some Bute to give Racer as well. Founder is (from what I can understand of it so far) when a horse eats to many carbs, they become stocked up in their legs and several things happen. Their coffin bone rotates, they can't walk hardly at all, they can go completely lame and they can die if it gets to extreme.

The vet is puzzled as to why this has happened. Racer does not get mega amounts of grain, he is on mediocre hay, and no grass. It is thought that this might be foldover from his thyroid problem. I have been out with him most of the day trying to get him comfortable. Standing with him for an hour on and an hour off in the creek to cool off his feet, and hunting for answers to this frustrating condition.

Right now he is standing under the trees, won't move to much and I just put his blanket on him to keep the rain off him and gave him a gram of Bute. I am heading back to the barn where I can keep a better eye on him. It is going to be a long night..

Argh. I am overloaded with fluids - been drinking water and green tea

Keep yourself warm out there Hissy, and take good care of yourself as well as Racer.

just finished watching the what not to wear marathon.. Wow I wish someone would give me $5000 for a new wardrobe, however I would be soo embarassed especially in the dressing room shots..

It's snowing here and we are having pretty high wind gusts. My grandma's boyfriend adopted roxy's brother apparently and gave him the name macka (pronounced "mutch ka" which i THINK is slovak for "cat", but they call him "mutch check" for some reason). It was so cute to see him cut up all kinds of turkey and thanksgiving food into tiny pieces for him. Unfortunately macka is pretty wild and won't come inside so he is probably out freezing and freaking out somewhere
You can really tell that roxy and macka are related, they are sooo much alike, it kills me that I can't get macka to come to me.. I keep thinking what if that was roxy alone and wet and cold in the snow

I think I'm finally over the black plague of death which I had all week, I'm still a little stuffy but besides that nothing much else is wrong. I think I'm going to go to bed now because I'm just so exhausted..

MA I hope Racer is going to be OK

MA, I wish you and Racer well tonight...take hot tea or coffee in a thermos for you, if possible.

We've just watched apollo 13 again, dh did some telecommuting work from home this eve, and I did some work as well. Alix is curled up in her bed in its new spot next to my new computer desk/work area, and Patrick, who is eating better at the moment, is snoozing on his favorite "cloud" bed.

We popped up our first lights - indoor along an exposed beam, these are holly berry lights we picked up at Costco..what a lovely set of lights

Hissy, I sure hope Racer gets better.

I slept for about an hour and woke up with a plugged up nose again! Sheesh! It is getting better every day though so I can't complain.

Got my Christmas tree decorated tonight. I have a few more lights to put outside but have been putting it off until I feel a little more myself!

All the cats were going psycho tonight! It was hillarious! Well, it wasn't so hillarious when Jake started batting at the Christmas Tree. Peaches doesn't bother it. She just sprawls out like a queen under it and displays her beauty! Hallie likes to watch it. It's on one of those stands that slowly turns. Carmella could care less about the tree. Henrietta hasn't really decided about it yet. Hallie was chasing all the other cats up and down the hallway. She is getting much more active and social around the house every day! I just love that little girl!

Have a good night everyone!

Well it's almost 4:30PM Saturday...I never know whether I should post in here or start a Saturday one when it gets to this time of day.

I've bought 8 litres of paint...it cost $145...
...and it's for the bedroom. I've decided what I'm going to do on my week long holiday...PAINT! I finally told my boss that I quit and boy did it feel good. After this week with my pay being late yet again, and next week's roster not being available, I decided that enough was enough and I have the bank job lined up anyway.

Mary Anne, I hope the weather is kind to you and Racer tonight. Stay warm.

vettechstudent Keep going. The break's almost round the corner.

Sam Since when are weekends productive? (Ok...well I always have busy ones so I'm not one to talk.
)

Pat & Alix Good to hear that Patrick is eating better for now. Hope it becomes a permanent thing.

mzjazz2u Made me think twice about getting a tree. Though I'll probably end up getting one anyway.

Have a good night everyone. Sleep well.

Oh get a tree anyway! It's entertaining!
BTW I think you meant 4:30 A.M.?

Like my new siggy guys?
Mary Anne, is it ok? It's well under 40 KB which I think is what the suggested size for siggys is, right?

It's fine- very festive, and not that large that it would slow up the loading for dial-up users. It is when the signature fills half the panel of the text box that there are problems.

I just got in from the barn. There is little I can do at this point for Racer except worry and research . I need to find out if this is founder or cushingsoid, and the blood panel will tell me this in a few days. He is moving better- but not great. Walks like a marionette puppet (that's the closest I can come to describing his walk) I crashed on the hay in the barn, and although comfortable (and itchy) I would wake every hour or so to check on him. But the vet wanted to know if he was going to lay down and not get up, and so far he has stayed on his feet. It's raining like a sum of a gum and he won't go in the stall. I didn't expect her would, the hard floor would be difficult for him to stand with his soles being so sore. Trav is out with him for company so they are both getting soaked together...

Ok I am wide awake and off to research this frustrating condition.
If anyone is interested, a cyberfriend of mine had to deal with this condition and here is her and Winnie's story:

No, look where she is posting from....

I love this board, there are so many people from all over the world, there is almost always someone on line when I am looking for something to do at night when I can't sleep.

I know where she's posting from. I was poking at the confusion factor since it was only 2:15 A.M. at the time where I was posting from! Thus the winkie I added!
Looks like it worked too!
