Hello, new to site. I've been reading various threads but I'm still at a loss for what could be going on with my cat. Bob is a tripod, bobtail he has suffered from stomatitis since I have had him and a manaigery of other things. He was removed from a severe hoarding sitaution but was FIV,Fvrcp tested. (Neg) He has had a FME done and was having some inflammation in his mouth causing him to not eat so the vet had us put him on ATOPICA.He was dosing every other day and during that time started sneezing and showing signs of possible upper respiratory infection took him in and we started antibiotics. Seemed to be doing better but the sneezing coughing started back up and I called to check with the vet who said let's do a second set of antibiotics believed maybe it was just a severe case.

For the holidays my cat traveled with us and once we arrived at our destination had issues. We came home to find blood coming out of his nose. Immediately called a vet tech friend that gave advice and said to come in the next AM (preferred that night but my finances are limited). Went in the next morNing and the vet believed my cat had busted blood vessels from sneezing so hard(the blood had stopped and was just regular discharge by the am). He did a pre anesthetic blood work which showed my cat to have some kind of infection. We did a dose of batryil and steriod. Went home with azithromycin and nose drops.

For the rest of the holiday my cat was doing very well. We came home and within the first day he begins the congestion again but no nasal or eye discharge.Just congested breathing. I called and asked my vet could and should we do another round of the azithromycin again and they sent his perscription in. We are on the 5th day and his breathing is very noisy and congested sounding. We put him in the shower and let the steam do its work. He's eaten alright mainly broth and small amounts of wet food, drinking water, using litterbox, eating treats (though tonight has been the least he's eaten).

We have been on antibiotics for a while now and it doesn't seem to help. We have a history of using steroids(due to stomatitis) and they obviously helped with this last round of whatever is going on but I'd prefer not to keep giving those to him but it seems to be all that works. I'm at a loss really and truely. The stomatitis has been hard to deal with but we seemed to be on the right track now we have this...
(Also we stopped the atopica when the bloody nose happened)

Sorry for the length but it's all the important info. (My funds are limited and I'm trying to avoid an emergency visit to the vet but do plan on going Monday during regular hours) Any ideas or views as to what I could be dealing or if maybe you've had the same thing happen, with would be appreciated, thank you

Atopica and steroids all prevent the immune system from functioning properly. Atopica basically has completely shut down his immune system.

He could have a viral infection which has turned into a bacterial infection or a viral infection he can't fight off. If it is viral antibiotics will not help.

This is the risk with steroids. My friend had a horse with asthma who was on steroids. He caught an infection which invaded the spinal cord and caused such severe nerve damage he had to be put down. This was an infection over 90 percent of horses are exposed to without issue.

I would consider taking him off the steroids as that is the only way he can fight this... or you need antiviral medicine or more antibiotics.

Have they done a culture to see what antibiotic is best for the infection?

You need to determine what infection he has first.

I would not be traveling with this cat, as that is stressful and increases his exposure to germs. Look for a foster home or a friend with no pets who you can pay to look after him while you travel.

As this cat is immunosuppressed you need to avoid exposure to infections.

I know atopica is sometimes necessary but it is risky. It increases the cancer risk as well. Atopica changes cancer cells into a more aggressive form in addition to shutting down the immune system...

Unfortunately I do not have anyone that could have watched him as I am new to the area. Also boarding him for two weeks wasn't really in my price range. The trip was as calm as possible but I am aware that it can be stressful no matter what. Also as stated previously we have stopped the atopica (I know steriods supprese the immune system). But being we are on the third round of antibiotics and the steriod worked better I was wondering if he has asthma. I will suggest to the vet a culture be done so that maybe we can get the right antibiotic if they still think its an infection.

Cats are creatures of habit and thrive on routine.  Any time their routine is disrupted, they get stressed.  Stressors include having work done in your home, people coming and going, loud noises, moving, traveling, a change in routine or work or school hours.  Stress can cause all kinds of complications in kitties and their health, so you're probably seeing an upper respiratory infection.  Since you said he's congested sounding, you can try steaming him in the bathroom.  Get the bathroom good and steamy, bring him in, then sit with him until the steam dissipates.  You can also use Little Noses saline solution in his nose to help with the congestion.  If his nasal discharge is discolored, ask the vet to do a culture and sensitivity test.  That will tell the vet if he's got a viral or bacterial infection and which medication will best treat it.

One of my cats has asthma. She vomits and coughs but has never had a bloody nose.

Asthma will show up on x rays.

Everything you have listed I have done over and over again. Recently took him back to the vet, who after an exam still leans towards an infection (herpes). I myself have wondered if this is just a very ugly infection we cant get rid of. Currently we are on a new antibiotic (orbifloxacin), neo poly dex with 1mg afrin, and mirtazapine for appetite boost. He seems a touch better but still congested at times. He isnt really himself either. Im beginning to worry this might really be the end. The vet said a culture would be a good idea but he just came off of azithromycin and so it wouldnt really do much good to run the culture. But not having him on antibiotics for 4 or 5 days is a no because he is sick. So I'm still at a loss here trying to get him healthy. My funds are running beyond low, my car needs work, I am paying off a surgery, and the cat is still sick. Gonna try and give the antibiotics time to kick in. Also anyone know anything about newton homeopathics?
