Just found out my 11yr old tabby has hyperthyroid and a urninary tract infection.  She recently quit eating her dry food probably due to her teeth.  Always had the hardest time brushing her teeth.

I asked my vet if her urine should be acidic or non and he just rambled not really answering. Saying its not acidic or non it's ph but never did say what the level should be...He is one of those vets that wants me to put her on c/d.   My cats have always been on Holistic High protein brands and just having her switch to all canned now after noticing her wieght loss has caused more weight loss, the amount of canned they have to eat is quite a bit for a little cat who is finniky, I sometimes resort to the crappy brands that they like just to get her to eat!  I mainly give her blue buffalo assorted flavors as she likes one flavor one day and the next not!   She is a fish eater but I have found out that they are starting to realize Hyperthyroid has a connection to high sodium content and fish foods especially those with bi product (which I rarely give) have even more sodium.

She is on tapazole but have not seen improvements yet...its early still.  It is cosing a fortune and Vets these days seem to be all about money rather than whats best for the pet, once she is past having a decent life and is suffering I will not let the vet prolong it for his $$$benefit-been there done that.Though I will go to the Holistic Vet first and see if they try something different.

A regular vet wants you on their diets (as far as I'm concerned they get kickbacks for how much they sell-no none can tell me different)  and the lable is half words you can't pronounce and by products and corn etch etc, and the last time I tried a canned science diet brand they vomited immediately, they are not used to that stuff in their food.

The holistic vet pushed me real hard to switching to Raw and made me feel like a bad parent for not switching, I did try when they were younger but they wouldn't do it.  So its one extreme or the other, no in between!

I've been reading on some sites how successful Raw Apple Cider with Vinegar has been for many different things mostly UTI but the dosage varys on those sites and not sure how much to use.  Some say 2-4drops in their food, some say in water.  Myself with Bladder infections I've always been able to clear up pronto with ttsp of baking soda to 1 glass warm water for a few days though it usually works after the 2nd glass.  I wondered about trying that on her a small amount from the glass a few times a day?  It is supposed to neutrilize everything but that may make her less acidid.

I'm going on the hunt for the strips if I can find them, it seems that anything that works dissappears from pet stores.  You used to be able  to buy Taurine, now you can't not here, only for people then it's hard to know how much to give. If I find them I will try some of your suggestions I've seen here. The strips are for felines specifically????

I also found a site that tells how to make your own food, that way you can control the bi products but you  this site suffested cooking the food enough to kill bacteria and which meats for low sodium, which is chicken mostly.  But it doesn't look that easy to a novice and hwo do you trust one site on what to suppliment as you have to suppliment vitamins and minerals.  I may just buy some ready made Raw and cook it and offer it to her jus to see if she'll eat it, then go from there.  Has anyone had experience making food like this???

Any suggestions would be appreciated, I don't want my old girl to suffer.

Hello! My 12 yr old male was diagnosed hyperthyroid when we took him in for a urinary blockage. He was prescribed Methamizole - he takes 1/4 tablet in the morning and 1/2 at night. He's been on this med for almost 2 years with no side effects & his levels are stable. It's pretty inexpensive ($18 lasts about 6 weeks). Also we have been feeding him the EVO chicken & turkey dry formula supplementing him with Purina's Urinary Tract formula canned food at night. I'm not a fan of Purina but I've read a lot of good reviews for this particular formula & he loves it. He has not had another UTI incident since switching. Also, I have another cat that had chronic UTI's & she's been perfect too. I used to use Love My Pet Kidney & Bladder relief when she would have a flare & it really seemed to help. I purchased that from Only Natural Pet online. Many of my cats' issues were caused by eating crappy cat food that my neighbor would leave out to feed stray cats. So needless to say we had to make our indoor/outdoor kitties Full time indoor kitties. Hope this helps.

Oh! One more thing - I only give my cats purified drinking water. Tap water is really bad!

I wondered about water too, one of my previous kittys who died of renal kidney failure was on tap water.

At the time it was just crystals she had, I lived in a small town then and was giving tap water.  I switched to the expensive science diet food for urinary tract infections that had low magnesium and ash.  I then found out that the water there had high magnesium content and switched the cat to water filtered with a brita and then eventually bought the big jugs of distilled.  She cleared right up and I no longer needed the food.   I just started buying better quality food and watched the magnesium and ash content, this was going back about 20 years, how they treat this has changed slightly I think as well as how they treat diabetes in felines.         Notice how the Holistic brands switched to high protein low carb long before the vet brands?

I'm betting this is very common and all kinds of cats drinking tap water are affected, but only a good Vet would tell you that because they wont make money on that suggestion.  Sorry I am bitter toward some vet's now, unfortunately the ones with awesome reputations are too far for me to go, or rather my cat.  Even after spraying her kennel with feliway and driving 40km an hour she pukes twice or so on a 5 minuet drive, too stressful for her.

Not sure weather distilled has too much alkaline in it or not, hope I'm doing the right thing.

She died many years later, of RKF at a much older age, it was my spouses cat,  I knew something was wrong but my spouse would not let me take her in.  We found out when I finally took her in that she had diabetes, then she ended up with renal failure.

Twice I noticed after cleaning my floors with the ever popular wet mop that she was licking the floor after I was done.  Pushed her away and noticed it a second time from then on I put her in a room when I washed my linoleum floors and later found out that the cleaner is one molecule away from antifreeze!  Beware cat owners!

You may want to switch your cat to spring water or purified water. Here is a link that explains why distilled may not be the best, but it's still better than tap water. I know it can be information overload when you're trying to do the best for your pet. I feel like all my cats are special needs & I drive myself crazy trying to make the best decisions for them. Vets can be so frustrating with outdated info & they seem offended if you question them. Now, I usually take my cat for diagnosis & then try to do research & compare to my vet's recommendations.
