Still having issues with food...

As a poor college student, I'm trying to get the best food I can for the best price.

My two cats eat mostly wet food. A 3 Oz can each in the morning and they split one at night, but I leave dry food down for them to nibble at.

They are eating Nutro Max cat right now in roasted chicken, but my youngest girl seems to have bad gas from it. She toots constantly!

I pay $11.99 for 3 lbs of Nutro Max. Authority is $12.99 for 4 lbs. I really can't afford more than that. Should I stick it out with the Nutro Max or switch to Authority?

Those are the only two 'better' brands I can afford. I could go with grocery store brands but I know they aren't as good.

Check out Simply Nourish , also at Petsmart . It is pretty good  dry food as well ..  They have several different formulas but this one has different ingredients than the two you mentioned above . It is about the same price too . Could possibly help with the gas problem .

I prefer Authority but I have BAD history with Nutro so I refuse to feed it. (Nutro caused my dog bloody diarrhea, lethargy, vomiting blood, chow hound lost her appetite....She was dying on it. And so were other pets yet Nutro refused to acknowledge it.) I'm feeding Authority now and have fed it previously with no problems. Good health and energy, plus the cats like it!

Would you be able to splurge on a big bag once? It'd last longer and you could put up money during the time it takes for them to eat it to continue buying larger bags, much more economical. :) I think the 8 lb bags are only $4-5 more than the 4lb if you couldn't make an 18lb bag slide.

I like Authority dry. I've always had good results with it. And if your cats like it, you can probably get a better deal buying the 8 lb bags than the 4 lbs. I wouldn't get an 18 lb bag for two cats though, it would likely get stale before they finish it and you may end up throwing out food they won't eat.

That'd depend on how much they eat and how long it takes them to get through it. (And possibly how picky they are) A bag can last several months if kept tightly wrapped and stored in a cool area. There's roughly 77.8 cups of food in 18lb bags of Authority GF. If they're eating say 1/2 cup each, for a total of 1 cup per day, the 18lb bag would last roughly 2.5 months which is an acceptable time frame imo. If they only eat 1/2 cup or less between both cats and it would take 5-6+ months to get through then yeah, probably not worth buying and storing a large bag.

You're right - my experience is mostly with small cats who don't eat much, so bigger bags (15+ lbs) lasted 3-4 months, and would get noticeably stale even to my dull human senses. Cats with a bigger appetite could probably get through it all before that happens.
