I have a female cat. Penelope, who I got as a rescue at about 4 months old, she's been an indoor cat a close companion for the past 20 years. About 2 years ago she fell ill and was diagnosed with hyper-thyroid condition, fortunately, she has responded quite well to Methimazole (1/4 of a 5mg tab twice a day), beyond her initial diagnosis, Ive had her back 2 additional times for blood work, with no change in her dosage, she seems happy, healthy and most people are quite amazed when they learn her age as she still acts a good bit younger than her age.

In September I lost my job, and had to undergo some rather expensive surgery in November, Penelope was due for another blood test at that time; I explained to the vet the circumstances, and she agreed to renew the prescription without bloodwork at that time. As her medication is running low I asked if we could do that again, as A) I'm still not able to return to work and struggling to pay for the medicine, let alone the $170 for the tests and B) while I'm not one to put a price tag on things, this is a very elderly cat who in all respects seems very healthy and comfortable.

While I fully understand the vet wanting to preform her due diligence in the capacity of her job and practice, and understand that there are health risks for the cat, the simple fact is I don't have the money at this point to have them done. Going to another vet is not an option as I'm very certain, not knowing my cats medical  history, they are not simply going to offer a prescription.

I know that Penelope is dependent on the Methimazole to maintain her health - I'm hoping perhaps someone may know another source for this besides through my vet - I dread the thought of her coming off these pills as I'm sure the cost and complication(s) from that are high.

I appreciate any input.

Thanks

Perhaps one of these programs could help you:

Care Credit: 866-893-7864
www.carecredit.com
A credit card company for health/veterinary care. Offers a variety of plans and low monthly payments. Since many veterinary hospitals do not take payment plans, Care Credit may be a solution if you are not able to afford the whole cost of treatment all at once.

Wells Fargo Health Advantage: 800-248-5012
http://retailservices.wellsfargo.com/healthadvantage.html#4
Gives pet owners the option to pay over time for a wide variety of routine and emergency care for pets including general veterinary care for pets, including: general veterinary care and procedures; emergency treatment and procedures; and hospital care.

Can you talk your vet into only ordering a thyroid panel? That shouldn't be too expensive. Also have you checked a clinic at one of the Humane societies they may offer some services on a sliding scale cost.
