First off, I am taking my Moderator hat off here. I am not representing the Team, although some may agree with me. What I am posting are my own personal feelings. I am also not the Moderator assigned to this forum.

Do you think that perhaps we can all work towards a kinder, gentler Nutrition forum this year?

Due to some recent issues I have been working to expand what I currently feed my cat. I have not posted in this forum about it, which would seem to be the logical thing to do. Why? I have seen quite a few posts that are a bit judgmental about what others feed. This certainly may not be the intent, but on more than one occasion I have been made to feel like I am not fit to own a cat based on what I feed. I’m a Moderator and have been a member for 9-1/2 years. If I am feeling that way, how do you think a new member feels?

My cat has allergy issues and what may work well for your cat could very well send my cat to the vet. Please do not assume all cats are the same and that there is one perfect diet for a cat. There’s not. There is no one perfect diet for humans, so there is no need to assume there is one for cats.

We are here to help and educate, not belittle. If a member asks for the best dry food, by all means, please give them advice and refer them to some of our very useful articles on the subject. Please do not infer that they are unfit to own a cat. If a member asks about raw or homemade, please refer them to our raw and homemade forum where our very knowledgeable members can help. Please do not suggest that all raw is bad and full of pathogens. These are just a few examples.

Please when posting think about your tone. As we always like to say, honey works a lot better than vinegar. Please put yourself in the place of a brand new member asking for advice and think about how you would like to be treated. We do not know a member’s cat, their financial situation or their living circumstances. The best we can do and hope others do is feed the best food we can afford that will work best for our cats and that they will actually eat, no matter what that may be.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Well said and agree perfectly. We're all doing the best we can based on the invaluable information we find on this website, our finances and our personal conditions. And I wholeheartedly agree that what works for one cat may most definitely not work for another.

My best wishes to all the readers and their fur babies for a happy, healthy 2015.

Bumping this as a reminder for us to refrain from shoving our opinions on others, no matter how right we think we might be.

Everyone who owns a pet thinks he/she is an expert and knows best about feeding, grooming and keeping the pet. And it is a fact that you have mentioned that we never know under which circumstances one is keeping the pet. So it is best to provide the good advice and not to engage into argument. The health related issues specially needs medical attention above all other things. Here people could only ask for a proper guidance and it should be given with all support and love.

I'm taking the liberty of bumping this because I too, at some point or another, have felt shamed here by decisions I'm making regarding my (unintentionally) adopted 2 year old and her babies, be it food, care and other topics.

Considering I've only been here 3 months or so, i bump this with fresh eyes.

I'd also like to add that 99% of the people that have kindly replied have done so respectfully and maturely. They ask further questions to understand my situation and provide great insight and advice on issues across the board. A few "distracted" apples hasn't made a dent in this site.

Many thanks to the moderation team and all the members that keep the site running so well and judgement free!
