Hi everyone, just to let you know that Arthur has been eating a regular good quality cat food. He is pooing regularly and still eating the prawns too.
If you have read my previous threat you will know that Arthur was very ill and after lots of theorising, a week in a veterinary hospital and other exploratories the diagnosis is auto immune - they think. I have looked back to when this started and I am remember he began acting strangely and going down hill before he was actually ill and this started after his 5th booster jab. Having researched about boosters and vaccinations I realize there is a school of thought that doesn't believe cats needs boosters every year but only 3/5 years and a titre test will probably give you his immunity status.
On Boxing Day I began giving his live yoghurt by syringe and still as as he still won't lap it up but one of my other cats Charlie loves it! He is slowly filling out again and his mouth doesn't appear to be causing him pain when he eats which is a lot faster than he did before. His nasal discharge which has been one of the main problems appears to be drying up too.
Here is my main problem. Arthur has two steroid jabs before Christmas the last one on Christmas Eve. They did not help him to eat and after having a clear nose his nasal discharge started immediately after the Christmas Eve jab. The vets have told me to give him steroid tablets plus medicine to counteract any side effects. When I point out that he is eating without steroids they disregard it and say the tablets should help his skin. His skin problem was the last thing to occur when he was ill and this was after a cocktail of antibiotics, metacam and pain killers over a course of 5 weeks during which he ate very little food and lost 1.5kg. I don't think it is surprising his skin is as it is. When I spoke with my vet today he just tells me to give him the steroids which I am loathe to do as they didn't help before and I think they will only make matters worse and set him back again and I don't think his spirit would be able to take it again.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can help relieve his itching in the short term til regular eating and supplements of salmon oil take effect? I don't think throwing more drugs into his system which I hope is now clear of them is the answer - and for those who think I should listen to my vet, well so far they haven't achieved anything in 3 months except to take in a lot of money from my insurance company. I have already decided he won't be vaccinated next September. My previous cats never had regular annual boosers and they lived to ripe old ages.
