We had a starving blind cat show up in our backyard two weeks ago_Our vet thinks the cat is around 8yrs old. The cat was skin and bones when he first showed up, other than that he has no other ailments.  He does sometimes pee in his cat bed,he will use the litter box but not always. I am trying to train him to use the cat box but do to his age I am not sure that is possible. I have never had a blind cat and I am not sure if that is why he is having the potty problems. Is there any hope that this kitty will ever use the litter box exclusively?

Thank goodness you found him in time. He may still be too weak to get himself up. He may also be scared at some noise in the middle of the night and pees on himself. Cats then find the smell comforting so you usually will find them laying in it. I really do think it's one of the two issues above. Probably the latter. Assuming it's a learning issue I would think you'd need to start out with him having a smaller living space for him to be able to find everything within a few yards, food, bed, litter box. I'd repeatedly try to put him in the litterbox and let him find his way out and make sure his bed is close. Also use a litter like cat attract which has its own smell to a cat. I'd think he'd need an open litter box at first so he can smell it.I think he just has a lot of adjusting to do also remember he probably has never used a litter box or hasn't used one since probably being dumped by him old owner. Don't lose hope you did a wonderful thing rescuing him!!!

Aw, poor thing. Thank you for helping him. Does the vet know why he's blind?

I have a blind cat who doesn't have any litterbox issues so i agree with the above, give him a chance to recover and then see where he is.  Make sure he has easy access to the box as well.

When he pees in his bed does he stand up to do it or does he do it while he's laying there?  Most cats who had a training issue would not pee in their bed.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. The vet wasn't sure how the cat lost his sight but he thinks the cat has been blind for a very long time. He is getting a little better every day, he has been eating good and drinking lots of water. Two weeks out and he is still wobbly on his feet though. When we found him he had a collar that was three sizes too big. His weight was just under 6lbs at the vet. Thanks again for the responses.
