A few weeks ago I gave my cat an OTC flea medication that she has had before. A few hours after one eye was red and tearing. It stayed that way so I finally took her to the vet

The vet said she had very mild conjunctivitus, and put her on an antibiotic ointment that I've been giving her for longer than I was supposed to. Twice as long actually which probably isn't good ... But it's just not working.

Her eye is still pink around her upper eyelid. Watery. Discolored pinkish brown underneath. The vet said that, if it's not an infection, she might have squamous cell carcinoma but there would be no way of knowing right now.

I don't know what to do or if there's something else that can be done. It seems weird that this problem came up right when she got the flea medication, but the vet said it's unlikely that had anything to do with it.

Is there anything else I can do to find out what's wrong with her or fix the problem? Could she still have an infection and the ointment isn't working?

I dunno what to do. She's been my kitty for 11 years. I'm so scared she has cancer or something. :( The vet made it sound like this ointment was the only option, and after that there's nothing.

hi and welcome to TCS!

i'm so sorry to read that your girl has conjunctivitis.

honestly, the best thing to do now is to either return to your vet's for further treatment for your girl, or seek a second opinion from another vet/a different vet practice. the bottom line is that this condition/these symptoms must be treated, and the vet will be able to decide what the best course is to continue treatment. delaying another vet visit delays further treatment, which may allow the conjunctivitis to become worse or much worse -- which in turn means the costs of treatment could easily go up.

i'd try not to focus on the possibility of squamous cell carcinoma right now. our minds can easily go to the worst possibilities when our furbabies are ill. i'd focus on seeking further treatment or a second opinion at the moment.

I totaly agree! There are more that one option for eye drop/ointment antibiotics. Tell the vet it isn't working & that you are very concerned, & want to try another option. Plus, if it's been that long, not only is it not working, I'm sure she is immune to it by now. (?)

I'd seek a second opinion. Do you have a cat only vet in your area?

Thanks for answering guys. :3 I'm so scared for my kitty.

There's no cat only vets unfortunately. I'll try to find someone else for a second opinion though. The last vet didn't seem to take it seriously.
