I to have been doing lots of research.  My cat which is healthy and perky and fully of energy about 2 days woke up and looked pregnant.  I knew something is wrong - indoor cat and male.  It happened so fast.  Being New Year's tomorrow vet's close early this evening because of New Year's Eve and lots closed tomorrow.  Couldn't get appointment until Friday.

He was too bloated to wait so found an animal er clinic which doesn't triple charge you during normal office visits.

First thing they did was press belly - no pain, vet said definitely filled fluid would have to do xrays, blood work and possibly ultra sound.  I was at the er clinic 4 hours.

His blood work all came back normal.  He has no temperature.  Definitely fluid in the tummy.  Xrays looked fine fecal was moving through intestines and colon, etc.  However, he said try to watch when he goes in the litter box.  I have 2 cats so kind of hard.  But will do.  He saw no blockage either.

My cat is eating, jumping up on counters and playing.  Just a fat belly.  So vet said let's just drain it.  They did and it was lots fluid.  He's back to normal size again.  They suggested an ultrasound to see if something else can explain it.  I said what would it be.  They said cancer possibly but not sure.  That would be $400 for ultrasound and $150 to have analyzed.  I asked if cancer there would is next step and he said Chemo or/and steroids.   I said but everything else came back fine in reports.

So he drained him today and we are putting him on steroids and an antibiotic.  He is an indoor cat so has no diseases or anything else.

The vet said he has seen this a couple of times and it can be negative.  My cat always likes to eat any crumb on floor.  There was a little think that was near exiting bowels.  Could be cause too.  He also likes to eat ribbons off presents.

I am hoping it doesn't come back after they have drained and just something weird that happened.  We shall see and I will keep you posted.  I thought maybe a blockage but wasn't.  Good luck with you cats too.  Keep us posted.

He's home doing what he likes to do play, eat and sleep.  Today for draining, xrays, medicine, visit and blood work was a total of about $675.00.

BLOATED ABDOMEN.   Hello,  Many years ago my cat Chloe aka Gray had a bloated abdomen.  She was not able to lie down to rest, but had to sit.  When I took her to vet, he used a needle to withdraw the pussy fluid and said it might return.  I am talking about the early 1990's.

In Gray's case, if I remember correctly, it had to do with peritonitis or infection inside the abdomen.  Your kitty's symptoms do not sound at all the same.  All Gray would do is sit; as she could not lie down.  It was a hard decision to make, but I loved her enough to let her go.

It seems like your cat is moving about and eating; not the same thing at all as Gray's situation.

ALERT  FOR BLOATED ABDOMEN - If not you, this might be an alert for someone else.  In those days, all the vet offered was to drain her abdomen, and re-drain it if the infection continued.  I guess one might call it a massive abdominal infection.  I am happy that your kitty seems to be doing well.  What an odd situation.  If there was not pus in the drainage, my guess is that leaves out peritonitis which is very serious.  Good Luck to you all.
