Can Clavamox withdrawal cause depression, or a cat to become lethargic?

My cat was on Clavomox for over 1 month but he finished his medication 2 days ago, He was on Baytril for 3 months prior to the Clavomox to treat a bacterial infection due to feral cat bites which caused absesses. He has not eaten much today and he has been hiding to sleep. He normally sleeps on my recliner or the couch and likes to be around people. He has only come out briefly 2 times to see me today. Normally he follows me around the house many times a day,and he lays on my lap for hours in the evening. He has no desire to lay on my lap tonight. His ears and nose feel cool. He does not seem to have a fever. He did purr when I pet him but he refused to be held or lay on my lap. Can anyone tell me if Clavamox withdrawal can cause depression? Maybe his stomach is upset. I read that Clavomox can cause stomach upset. However he ate like a pig when he was on the Clavamox. LOL! I took a stool sample to the Vet. yesterday and it was negative for all parasites. Therefore it is not parasites causing him to loose his appetite. I would greatly appreciate feedback! Thank you everybody!

Clavamox is not known to cause depression on withdrawal, and it only causes stomach upset when they are on the drug, not off it.  It sounds like he is not over his condition and that you should consult a vet asap before you have a full blown infection causing you to start over from scratch on anti-biotics.  cats can purr when in distress, and his nose is not an accurate way to determine temperature.

Do you have him in a cone to prevent him from licking the abscesses? I've had kitties go into depression when wearing cones.

Never had Clavamox cause the symptoms you are describing.

But I'd also recommend a call to your vet. The lethargic-ness with not eating for a period of time is a big warning sign. His infection might have become more severe and you may not be able to tell at home.

StephenQ and ReiKitty, I am deeply saddened to announce that my beloved "Foxy"  had to be euthanized on December 31,2014. He had a 4 month bacterial infection caused by a feral cat bite to his left cheek. Foxy could no longer be on antibiotics because of severe, uncontrollable diarrhea. Within 48 hours of stopping the Clavamox Foxy had a high fever and became terribly ill. Euthanization was the kindest option to end Foxy's suffering. However he was a very, happy active cat during the 4 months he was on various antibiotics otherwise I would have made the decision earlier to end his suffering. I loved him dearly and I would not let my "baby boy" suffer! I don't regret the $1100. that was spent to keep him alive for 4 months however I am heartbroken that he left me so soon. Foxy was only about 8 months old. I had rescued him out of a car lot when he was approximately 4 months old. It was love at first sight for both of us! I love him as much as if I had him for several years. We had such a special bond!  :(  Thank you for caring about Foxy and your responses!

Rosa, I am so sorry to hear the sad news. You did everything you could, and gave Foxy a good life.

No, Foxy was not wearing a cone although he did wear one after his surgery for 2 weeks. The depression and lethargy was caused by his bacterial infection getting worst, and a fever. Thank you for your response!

Our hearts go out to you at this time. We are so sorry about your little kitty. You did everything you could for Foxy.

I am going to lock this thread and ask you to post about little Foxy in the Crossing the Bridge forum.
