My kittens were getting dry, and I started to switch to canned. I have been giving them 1/2-1 small can of food twice a day, and left dry in their bowls while I was at work. They seem to be eating less and less dry. Today it doesn't look like the touched much at all. Are they starting to prefer canned? What can I do while I'm at work? surely 2 cans a day isn't enough fork items who are 6 months and 3 months old.

That's not a bad thing.  This might be helpful

I have 2 kitties under 1 yrs old who only eat wet.    Kitties as young as yours should eat all the want until they get a bit older.   As they get older you can limit their food depending on their weight.

I know its hard to free feed wet food.   I"m away from the house about 9 hours while I'm at work.    Basically I feed mine twice before I leave for work.  I feed immediately when I get up and then a bit later right before I leave the house.     It amounts to about 3 to 4 oz's of wet in the morning.    I'll just leave some down when I leave.  I don't worry about leaving wet out.  My kitties won't leave it sitting there for long.    When I get home they will eat another 3 to 4 oz's.   Then before I go to bed they'll get another 1.5 oz's.

You could feed more wet to yours...if you don't feel comfortable for them to go all day without eating still leave the dry down for now.   But as they get older I would just feed wet or raw if you prefer that.    If you read the article you'll see what is healthier.

Your cats know what food is best for them
You can read the info at Catinfo.org for why canned and raw foods are best for cats.

You can use a timed feeder to provide meals for your cat while you are not home. The canned food goes into each compartment and then you program the times you want the food to be available. Canned food is ok if left out all day. Some people add extra water to the food to keep it from drying out too fast. Others freeze canned food in silicone ice cube trays and put the frozen cubes into the feeder to slowly defrost until meal time.

If your cats aren't really eating the dry food, you can eliminate it from the diet. Your cats won't miss it at all
For "crunchies" you can give hard treats or freeze dried raw.

That's what worked with my two cats - increase the amount of times they are fed, twice in the morn and in the evening, the more nutrient dense the food, the less likelier they are to be really hungry during the day.

That's the thing, I'm gone from 7:30 am till 5:30 pm. I could feed once in the morning, then when I get home, and then again around 10 or 11 when I get to bed. But hey are still eating dry, my kids actually just did their chores and we're putting food in the dish when it was empty!

I think your feeding schedule is fine offering canned to them 3 times a day and leaving dry out for them to nibble on when you are at work. Based on the new info that they are infact eating the dry, I think your kittens are going thru a growth spurt!
