I would also stay away from canned food that has more than 5% carbs. These include gravy style foods and food in pouches. High carb food is responsible for a whole host of chronic diseases, including UTIs.

Most commercial raw diets are very low in carbs so you should be okay feeding that to Pinky. (I don't know what brand she eats)
I noticed in earlier posts that you calculated the percentage of carbs in the Mauri kangaroo. I just tried calculating the carbs in the venison using the guidelines from Dr. Pierson, and came up at 18% (calorie percentage). I'm not actually sure if I did my math correctly, but I know that's way too high. What did you get when you looked at the kangaroo? I know I've got to be missing something.

I tallied the venison to be 4.6% carbs in wet matter basis. The dry matter basis comes to almost 21%. To me, that's too high because I don't want to go over 10% dry.

Brushtail is 3.9% wet and 17.7% dry, better than venison but still higher than I'd like.

Oh my gosh, I miscalculated the dry matter for kangaroo in my earlier post on first page! It's actually 17.7% dry matter, not 9%.

I sincerely apologize for tag mistake!

Ok, I've stopped giving the Mauri. Pinky has been on amoxicillin for 2 days now, and her UTI symptoms aren't much better. This UTI has really scared me. I hate to see Pinky suffer.

She may not have an infection, which means antibiotics won't work. She probably has inflammation instead. Was she given any pain meds?

My Josie had inflammation so I gave her homeopathy to relieve the pain and make her start going again. I gave her Cantharis and it took away the blood and pain in a few hours.

The vet suspected UTI, and gave her antibiotics without the urinalysis because they couldn't get urine from her. They didn't give her pain meds. There has not been any blood in her urine at all, and she's been urinating daily. I've seen discharge and excessive licking.

Can you give me any other symptoms? Is she constantly running to the box to relieve herself? Is she not sitting correctly, kind of like it irritates her? Has anything in the household changed that May have stressed her out?

I'm surprised your vet didn't do a urinalysis to see if she did, indeed, have a urinary infection.

And, yes, I would stop giving Mauri for the moment. And stop giving the fish stock, as well.

josiegirl josiegirl other than the discharge and excessive licking, I haven't observed any other abnormal behaviors. She has been getting pretty dirty all around her bottom when she poops (she's longhaired), and I thought that might have something to do with it, but the vet said it was too rare for fecal contamination to be the culprit. I've bathed Pinky and stopped the foods for now, and will continue the antibiotics. When she's on the raw chicken alone, Pinky's bottom stays pretty clean since she eliminates less.

Other things, Pinky does not visit the box often, cry when urinating or defecating, scoot her bottom, or sit funny. It's difficult to tell when something is wrong with her because she has such a laid back personality. I've accidentally stepped on her tail before and she won't even cry out (unusual in my experience).

Well, that sounds less like a UTI and more like an anal gland problem. What color is discharge? (And if it is an anal gland problem then antibiotics will help)

Did your vet rule this out?

The discharge is cream colored, not quite yellow. The vet didn't mention anal gland issues. The discharge is around the vulva.

There is one store in my area that carries it....Hollywood Feed..the clerk told me that it's not sold on any of the online sites and only carried in smaller "holistic-minded" stores. I have ate one cat with severe allergies, so I'm always searching for "novel" foods he will eat. I tried the brushtail and kangaroo...he ate the first can of brushtail..but wouldn't touch it the second time...has a lot of small bone fragments in the meat. The kangaroo, however, is a hit (so far...after 4-5 cans). The ingredient list looks good.
@Zoocat  What area of Alabama do you live? I have never heard of Hollywood Feed. We have Pickette's Feed though, I will check there. My cats love canned food. I use to only give it to them on weekends as a treat. I have been feeding them mostly dry and after reading the articles on TCS about dry vs wet; I have decided to introduce more wet/canned foods to their diet. I would like to find something that don't have so many additives.

BTW - I live just outside the Oxford/Anniston area.

@chalupa thank you for the insight. I will continue to monitor Pinky. I'm feeding her one can of Mauri in the mornings. I have a few cans of Nature's Variety, but have been hesitant to try it because Pinky has had a history of digestive problems. She has tolerated raw and Mauri pretty well.
If your kitty has a history of digestive upset, Nature's Variety canned - the Instinct line (not Pride), doesn't contain any gums that may contribute to or exacerbate digestive problems.  Instinct is gum free, Mauri isn't.

Here is some info on guar gum:

http://catcentric.org/2014/04/14/pet-food-ingredients-to-avoid-guar-gum/

The studies of guar gum benefits in humans also note its side effects: potentially severe GI pain and discomfort, diarrhea, and loose stools. Reports include nausea, excessive flatulence, and abdominal cramping. Beans and legumes have a variety of compounds in them that make them difficult to digest for humans, meaning they are doubly difficult for obligate carnivores with a digestive system that was never intended to process them.

Hope kitty is feeling better. :)

@kntrygrl256 I live in the Huntsville, AL area.  The Hollywood Feed started in Memphis I believe.  There are two stores in the Huntsville area and a couple in Birmingham, but I think those are the only ones in Alabama.     Anniston is about 50 or so miles from Birmingham isn't it?    If you're ever in Birmingham,  there's a Hollywood Feed in Hoover and one in Mountain Brook.   You can go to the Mauripetfood web site and go to the "find location" tab and see the locations it's sold....The two Hollywood Feed in Birmingham are the closest to you though....there are several other places in Georgia but unless you live on the Georgia side of Anniston, Hoover would be the closest.  If you're looking for canned food without alot of additives, you might also try Nutro Natural Choice....especially Chunky Chicken or Chunky Turkey....they don't have the carrageean.  Petco and Petsmart carry that brand so it might be closer to you to try that.

I just contacted Mauri about the amount of phosphorous in their food. I have one cat with kidney issues and I try to feed mostly foods lower on phosphorous. In case anyone is interested. We also started ising redwood hill goat milk kefir as a source of probiotics. We will see how that goes, their pet probiotic mix seemed to turn them off their food.

In case anyone interested, I emailed Mauri about phosphorous in their canned cat food. not sure I understand the percentages though, if you do please explain to me. what they replied:
In regards to phosphorus percentage levels in our food:
Kangaroo is 0.20%
Venison is 0.26%
Brushtail is at the higher end of our range at 0.36%

With that being said, we are lowering the levels of phosphorus in all our formulations we are producing this month.
Also we are launching 4 new proteins which we are focusing on lower phosphorus levels, Unagi (eel), Antibiotic and Hormone Free Duck, New Zealand Frost Fish and Goat.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I will update you on our improved phosphorus levels.

After about 3 weeks of being completely off of Mauri, Pinky seems completely fine (she had developed some sort of urinary problem). I won't be feeding her Mauri again, but want to find other canned foods to add variety to her raw diet. Someone mentioned Nature's Variety Instinct. It seems a bit high in fat. Any other low carb, high protein suggestions?
