update: a sort of stalemate

fancy comes into the livingroom- spends time near Ian, gets fussings and food and naps.
Midnight sits on her tree watching- more or less relaxed.

I lock Fancy in the bedroom when i am at work- I quite often find Midnight sniffing at the bedroom door. She is curious about Fancy.
Fancy is somewhat scared of Midnight- as in if Midnight growls or hisses Fancy wants to go to her room.
Fancy does not make any aggressive gestures towards Midnight. If left with the bedroom door open Fancy wants to come to the livingroom.
Midnight is seemingly coming to terms with the other cat in the house.
She wants to come close and sniff- but then she gets too close and panicks - we call that a hiss and run.

.

We think the more time they spend in the same room the easier it will get.

Midnight keeps going to the bedroom. Stares at fancy, Fancy stares at her. for hours.  if Fancy moves, Midnight runs away hissing.

i'm sorry this is so longwinded. Midnight is now keeping guard at fancy's door. If the door is open she sneaks in and just sits there and stares at Fancy. I think tonight is the first timne she actually tried to touch fancy- but not in a fighty way but more in a curious way. She sniffs fancy then hisses and runs.

ok so i think there's a problem. Fancy eats like a piggy and today I've felt her tummy- it's rock hard and i could feel stuff inside. What if she's pregnant? how can I tell?

Goodness.. I just presumed they had both been vet checked and spayed. You really need to take them both for checks.  Is Midnight spayed?

If Fancy hasn't been checked by a vet since you've had her it seems highly likely she would be pregnant.  You need to take her asap.

We have an article 'How to Tell if My Cat is Pregnant."

She was taken to a vet by the people who found her; correct?  Did they say if she showed any signs of having been spayed?  (I can actually tell on 1 of my cats because her fur sticks up funny.  The vet who spayed them likes to do incisions on the side.)  Cats who are unaltered have a very high drive to reproduce.  If she was outside and not fixed; there is a good chance she is pregnant.  I would consult with your vet soon.  You don't want to end up like a friend of mine; she woke up in the middle of the night to find a litter of newborn kittens literally on her feet on her bed.

Since she's not spayed, and a stray, the likelihood of her being pregnant is very, very high.  Eating a lot and being super affectionate could also be signs.

I really recommend a trip to the vet as soon as you can.

i figured that. But money is a bit funny right now- had a plumbing issue and that ate my emergency funds so i can't go to the vet until the end of the month.

Midnight keeps being of two minds towards Fancy- she either goes to the bedroom and sits in her corner and stares at fancy from about 3 feet away or sneaks close to her, tries to touch her... then freaks out hisses and runs.

She isn't trying to fight Fancy just seems intrigued and curious and weirded out- would Fancy's hormones if she's pregnant- do that?

Her hormones could contribute to the behaviors you are seeing.  Her tummy could also be bloating up because she isn't used to having such easy access to food.  You may find some helpful articles at the top of our Pregnant Cats and Kitten Care Forum.   If you are viewing the site on a desktop view they are in the blue section at the top.  While we are first and foremost a Pro-spay and Neuter site (outside of registered breeding programs); our Pregnant Cat forum is there to help all cat owners who find themselves caring for a Mama-to-be and her babies.
Kitten season is coming up quickly; and as Mani said; it's likely she is pregnant since she was a stray outdoors.  Cat pregnancies are about 9 weeks; but without knowing much of her history we wouldn't know how far along she might be.  We have some experienced Advisors who frequent the Pregnant Cat forum and the articles can help you as well.  In the meantime; you might consider looking for low-cost options for getting her spayed.  I know our local shelter offers "specials" on spay surgeries this time of year.

Good luck!

Do you keep them inside?  That's really important if they're not spayed..

If you could possibly get Fancy seen before the end of January, it would be ideal.. you need to know what you're dealing with..

Fancy has been wormed. She's a rather longish haired tortie so it is a bit hard to see, but her nipples do look kinda big and hard and an  intense pink.

Both of them are indoors only.

she will go next week on friday- couldnt get an earlier appointment.

The good thing is that Midnight and Fancy are coming to terms with being in the same place. While Fancy does not complain, Midnight still does hiss a bit when Fancy gets too close or if she thinks Fancy will eat her food.
Midnight is very curious and eager to be near Fancy- she will go wait at the bedroom door when it is close or just stalk in and try to get close and just look at fancy for hours if the door is open. Midnight will just go into the bedroom, look for Fancy then just sit there watching her.

She has occasionally tried to get close to fancy and touch her- but not to fight, just very shyly.

If Fancy is in the front room which we try to encourage when we are at home, Midnight is now leaving the cat tree to either sit on a desk or on the floor within 5-6 feet from Fancy. Fancy will sit on the couch next to Ian- she's daddy's girl, sit on my lap or on the chair. Midnight will try to get close to her if Fancy is asleep but keeps a wary 3 ft distance while Fancy is awake.

No incidents of fighting or wiping, but if Midnight does see Fancy unexpectedly she will still hiss and run.

still not sure they're ready to be alone together so the bedroom door stays close
