Sandie was adopted after my kids found her on the beach a couple years ago. She came to live with us while we looked for a home for her. During that time my youngest decided Sandie was her cat and wanted to keep her.

I almost said no, since we already have two recovered males, brothers who are neutered and healthy.

Sandie has been with our family for over a year now and we have only seen her have a cat fit a couple of times. She sleeps on my bed everynight and can be quite the cuddler(when she wants to). I thought it was safe to say that she has acclimated to an indoor life, wqhich is good since she is a very small kitty.

Now the problem:  One of the males "escapes" to the outside periodically and then returns home after a few hours(or until something scares him).

He is promptly quarantined(to check for bugs, etc), then cleaned up and then let back into the household.

This morning, three days after the escapist male getting out and retuning(getting a bath due to the mud), Sandie continually hisses at him when he approaches her and she is now acting angry towards everyone in the household, even my daughter who always picks her up to pet her.

She can be agressive when her food dish is threatened, but she has never been like this with everyone.

Any ideas on why this behavior has started up?

One reason may be, she is unwell.  Cats in pains doesnt have the same patience as otherwise. Typically, it goes in first hand against other cats in the household, but even the humans may get their lessons.

Here, the return of the traveller is probably mostly a coincidence.

Another possible explanation, his smells are still not his usual, so she reacts.

I guess she is spayed and healthy otherwise?    Anyways, I would recommend a vet visit for a thorough check up.    I dont think it has any direct connection with her being ex homeless.

Good luck!   @kittytrio

If she is used to seeing him go through this routine, and you cleaned him to remove any offenders, I agree with Stefan that it probably isn't because of him. I would look at anything else in her life that may be different, and I'd consider possible health issues.

I would check with Vet also.  I have a male who hates my daughter, when she is over and trys to pet him he hisses and misbehaves.  He will even hiss at me for about a half hour after she leaves.  Then he settles down and he loves me again.  The smell of your cat getting a bath could upset her, but she should have been okay with it three days later.
