About a month ago i got a new kitten. he was approx 6 months old when i got him, and for as long as I've had him he's had softer poop. Being the usual paranoid person that i am i took him to the vet and found out he had tape worms and giardia. So hes been dewormed with milbemax and has had one dose of panacur (as well as my older kitty as a precaution) hes due for another dose of the panacur in about a week. He doesnt seem to be in pain at all and is behaving like a normal kitten but hes still having soft poops and his tummy is gurgling a lot. Any ideas on what could be causing this still?

The normal course of treatment for Giardia using Panacur only is 3 days of med, followed by the same treatment 3 weeks later. Only giving one dose of Panacur each round isn't sufficient.

Also, there is new information out that says using Panacur (for 3 days) in conjunction with 7 days of metronidazole yields better results.

I suspect your kitten still has active Giardia, this the symptoms.

catpack catpack sorry, when i said one dose i did mean the 3 days. He was on metronidazole for a week aswell while the vet sent away his sample. He has also been on sulcrate for a week from a different vet that was unsure of what was going on with him

catpack catpack the vet sent away a fecal sample, which came back with the giardia. Is it possible that theres another parasite that wasnt found in his sample? Or maybe his intestines are damaged now? Since hes probably had the worms and giardia since birth. He didnt come from a very good situation apparently.

It is possible that another parasite was missed. This depends on exactly which fecal test was ordered. There is one that tests for 3 parasites (including Giardia) and there is one that tests for 7 (also includes Giardia.) There is also one that specifically tests for Giardia alone.

And, yes, there is also the possibility that having been sick for so long as caused problems.

We have a group of kittens (2 litters) that came from bad living conditions that had Campylobacter. The infection was so bad that it took 4 months of medication to clear up. A year and a half later, these babies still have to remain on very specific diets (and I highly suspect they will require this for life.)

Once they were cleared of the Campylobacter (we tested all 8 kittens individually as we had to isolate them in crates to get the infection cleared up) they were still having really bad diarrhea.

Long story short, we found out that their systems cannot tolerate ANY dry food/treats. They also don't do well with chicken or carrageenan. So, these guys eat Nature's Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Turkey, with the occasional LID Duck thrown in. We've recently found out that they can tolerate Stella & Chewy's freeze-dried raw turkey formula.

If a de-wormer can kill tapeworm it should also kill any of the other basic worms kitties get. I haven't had a Giardia case yet so I don't know about the Pancur...

I'd start him on some probotic paste. The meds are probably screwing with his gut and all the worms and everything else. Also pumpkin would be good for him too.

You may want to look at putting him on a low ingredient diet food (LID) as he may have sensitivities to certain foods.

I too had a group of kittens that had worms and the people who found them feed them only cows milk for 24 hours..... needless to say their guts were a horrible mess. It took me a couple a months to get them cleaned up. We had to treat for worms three times and each time their poo would go nasty again because their tummies were so sensitive. We also couldn't change to their diet with out poo issues, but after a few days they'd return to solid poos.

catpack catpack all it says on the receipt the vet gave me for the test is "ova & parasites giardia elisa antech" if that means anything to you, i have no idea.
reikitty reikitty ive been giving him some pumpkin occasionally and i did have him on fortiflora for a bit as well. It didnt really seem to be helping but that was before i knew of his giardia. I was thinking i would have to switch over his food. My other kitty has an allergy though and the vet suggested a food with duck for her, so any suggestions on an LID of that nature would be appreciated

And I see you're in Canada... looks like Pet Valu carries Natural Balance foods as well as several other stores in London. So you should be able to find it locally. :)

Yes, that information helps a lot. This means the vet *only* tested for Giardia, none of the other parasites/Protozoans I mentioned before. So, it is possible he has something else going on.
