Sophie was my little angel. We adopted her at the beginning of November but we noticed she was a bit sick. We took her to the vet and at first she had an upper respiratory infection and gave her antibiotics and sent her on her way. At that time she had a little runny nose and her third eyelids were coming out over her eye. Her one eye got better and her runny nose was better but her one eye had some red in it. We took her back to say "whats wrong with her eye" and they just said nothing. We went to a different vet and they still said nothing was wrong except she had a little abrasion on her eye. Gave us ointment sent us home.

Since then she started losing a lot of weight and wasn't eating very much. She would eat a tiny bit but it wasn't enough. She was starting to get weaker and more wobbly. And she also started sleeping a lot and having some accident problems in regards to peeing. They gave her appetite stimulants and those made her really dizzy.

We had blood tests done and asked everything we could to find out what was wrong with our cat. She was only 5 months old. Last night she started acting weird she was crying and she wouldn't stand up on her legs she would just crawl. So I had my parents take her to the vet and I thought they would for sure say she was fine. But I was wrong. They had to put her down last night and all they could say was that it was a virus. They didn't even say what kind of virus it was and that just leaves me guessing. What happened to my baby? They told us to wait a few weeks to get another kitten to make sure the virus clears out of our home.

Her symptoms:

1. Unbalanced/Wobbly

2. Slept a lot/Lethargy

3. Had a cloudy eye that wouldn't go away

4. Weight loss

5. Didn't eat very much - had to assist feed the last couple days

They didn't think to run any tests checking for FIP. I'm not sure if that was it. I wish the vet could have given a name to the thing that took my baby away from me... Does this sound like FIP? They said she probably had it before we got her from one of the home based shelters around here. This was the vet she recommended and they have high reviews as apposed to the other vets around here. They told us to call the shelter and tell her what happened and said she'd probably let us adopt another cat for free.

If it was FIP what are the chances of the other cats at the home based shelter having it?

And what all should I do before adopting another cat in a month or two? I know I need to wait for the grief to subside.

Should I throw away Sophie's bedding and such? And i'm not sure if she had any accidents while we were asleep... Should I get a blacklight and clean up everything I find with an enzyme cleaner?

I just don't want this to happen again. No cat deserves to go through this and it was so hard for us to watch her deteriorate. We all were hopeful and thought she'd kick right back up once we got her to eat on her own and raised her weight. I'm really devastated.

Very sorry to hear this story. Very sad.

It may very well have been fip.

It sounds like her mild cold symptoms were coronavirus, which leads to the mutation of fip.

I know of NO other virus where the vet would recommend waiting that short period of time before getting another cat or kitten.

It is not necessary to toss everything, and it does not infect other cats. The mild coronavirus is super common, and is said that nearly all cats at some point come into contact with it and contract it, whether symptoms show or not, and the vast majority clear themselves of the virus.

Then occasionally, the cat does not, it seems to go away but is actually in hiding, sort of dormant, then suddenly, whether stress triggers it or what, it begins wreaking havoc inside. It is 100% fatal.
