As I sit here listening to my cat gasping through congestion after aspirating again, I have to wonder if it is worth another vet visit at $200-$300 for antibiotics. Has anyone ever heard of a cat being like this? My cat is going on 6years and this the 15th or 16th time. It tends to be hairball related. She is a long-haired black cat.

Yes, definitely worth a vet visit after aspirating! If not treated early, this can turn into a serious case a pneumonia.

How frequently is your kitty having these episodes? I have 4 long-haired kitties myself (2 with VERY thick undercoats) and very rarely do they have issues with hairballs. My oldest did until I realized it was related to IBD and food intolerances. Now that he is on the correct diet for him, we only have hairballs/vomiting episodes about 3-4 times per year.

She has had 3-4 per year with 1-2 resulting in serious congestion from aspiration. I feed her primarily Nutro Max cat food and give her treats for hairball from Whiska's daily. I wonder if it isn't something genetic as she was a kitten from a litter of one from a brother and sister pair of cats. I have never heard of another cat shaving repeated problems with aspiration from vomiting.

this happened to my mom's cat 3 weeks ago and we took him to the emergency clinic which cost about $800.  He spent about 12 hours in oxygen cage and with xrays and exam found out he had aspirated fluid into his lung.   This has just happened to him again although it doesn't appear to be as bad as last time.  so we're keeping an eye on him and hoping to hold off till tomorrow to see his regular vet. to avoid the high cost of the emergency clinic.

When this originally happened, we were told this is very rare in cats so we were hoping this wouldn't be an ongoing problem.  It's hard to believe this has happened to your cat so many times.....your vet hasn't been able to find out why this keeps happening?      Ever think about giving your cat pepcid daily to see if that might help?
