Hi, my cat just had his yearly vet checkup. He's in great health but he does have a bit of gunk in his eyes. He's always had a bit in his right eye but recently his left began to get eye boogers.

I generally clean his eyes. Vet also said infant nose drops might help (I've used them before). She mentioned it might be herpes.

Is there something else I can do in case it is herpes? He had a bit of nose boogers too, but no irritation or infection in nose or eyes...no fever. She said herpes can get bad sometimes.

It can get bad sometimes, or it can just stay present like it is with constant goop in the eyes. My cat Pushy has this too. He's had a couple of flare-ups where it got a lot worse, but for now :cross: his herpes presents as a constant runny left eye. We wipe it a couple of times a day and it's usually not too bad.
What our vet and the people here recommend is l-lysine supplements daily, pretty much for the rest of his life. Some people use lactoferrin too, but I didn't see any difference on that.
There are some good threads here about the lysine and how much to give etc. I give 500mg daily, 1000mg when he's having a flare-up.
My vet said to keep some human eye drops on hand for when he eye seems to be bothering him. The "dry eye" tear replacement ones, not anything for allergies.
Our vet says you can't really get rid of the herpes virus, just knock it into submission but it will always be present in the cat. Some cats have the virus and never show any symptoms, while others get flare-ups. Pushy had nothing for 10 years then all of a sudden his eye started running.
Stress will often bring on a flare-up so it's important to keep a consistent, calm environment.
It's important to monitor how bad it is asthey can get corneal scarring from it, but you would notice it getting that bad.

My house is in a bit of an uproar right now and I do suspect that has something to do with it. I will look into lysine treats, thank you. Am praying it never gets worse.

Can humans catch or transmit feline herpes?

I don't think so. We already have our own version of it I think - chicken pox and the HPV virus? Unless I'm mixing those up?

Humans cannot catch feline herpes.  It can be transmitted to other kitties, but usually it's in a high-stress shelter to kitties with weak immune systems to begin with.  Herpes does not go away, but it can be managed well.  Here's what I do for my herpes kitty:

-Grain Free diet, including grain free wet food (There is some thought that the arginine in grains causes the herpes virus to replicate)

-L-Lysine (Inhibits the replication of the disease.  I buy the powdered variety from Vitacost and add to wet food.  Maintenance dose is 500mg a day (250mg twice a day); flare up dose is 1000mg a day (500mg a day).  It's important to dose twice a day as the lysine needs to stay in their system.)

-Feliway diffusers run 24/7 to help alleviate stress

-Gentamycin or Tobramicin nose drops, as needed

-Saline nose drops (Little Noses) as needed

-NO vaccines, especially the "R" part of the FVRCP as that's the rhino virus which starts the whole ball rolling.

-NO steroids as steroids suppress the immune system and her immune system is already compromised

-Routine-helps decrease stress levels which helps decrease flare ups

My girl was diagnosed 6 years ago and just recently had her first flare up in all that time.
