I have a 7month old tabby that started itching 1-2 weeks ago. I cant seem to figure out why she is itching all over her head and neck. There is evident hair loss on the tops of her head and front legs. But the site is not red, inflamed or crusted. If anything, theres red scabs. I brought her to the vet and he said she does not have fleas/ ear mites. He also scraped the skin to see if there were parasites(came back negative). He said it might not be fungus because none of my family members have gotten it. He also stated that it cannot be allergies since she is still a kitten.

Diet : wellness core chicken , turkey and chicken liver formula. 2x daily. 1 can a day (we fed her 2 cans a day before but she was getting pudgy). Morning and night. She is recieving her main nutrients from wellness.

Treat: blue wilderness chicken and turkey recipe , BW kitty yums chicken. Sometimes boiled chicken wings , but only as treats. We do not give her the bone, we prefer not to feed raw meats.

We suspest it might be either dust or food allergies as we do have a dust prone area and we are feeding her quite a lot of chicken. We try to clean the house as much as possible however it doesnt seem to be easing up the scratching. But like we said, the vet doesnt think so. What do yall think?

hoping others pop in to give you some ideas. We struggle as well with our Mikki with scabs on her back. Kinda strange because she doesn't itch a lot at all, but gets these scabs then goes after them...licking them til they're raw and bleeding. We are using anti itch cream and they're looking good right now since the a)the cream soothes it, and b)it's bitter so she spits if she licks it.

From what I can see in the pic, there are a few tiny black specks, like pepper, that is flea poop.

When a cat is sensitive to fleas, it only takes one or two to drive them nuts, scratch like mad, etc.

Looks to me like fleas, and it's impossible for the vet to know there are no fleas at all, impossible.

Long fur too? Bet it's fleas. Even indoors only, they are still going to get in somehow.

Can't hurt to start treating her for a couple months, if it goes away, then you'll know :)

out of curiosity...does it take a few months of treatment to rule out fleas? We treated Mikki two months ago..with no change... just in case. I just assumed that meant it's not fleas that gives her scabs.. but should we treat several months in a row to rule it out?

There likely are fleas in the environment. It's not enough to give your cat flea meds. I would address this now while it's still winter, or you and kitty both will have a most miserable spring.

What I personally do and recommend to my fosters when they have a flea issue come up, is to treat the cat every 2 weeks, several times in a row to eliminate fleas/eggs/larvae in the environment if you are not planning to treat the home as well.

If you do, then I still will treat every 2 weeks for maybe 3 times, then resume every 3-4 weeks.

This is using Advantage 11, I can only speak for this kind of topical, since I have spoken with Bayer who makes it, and made certain it is completely safe to do this.

If you notice on the package, while it says monthly treatment, it says it treats for fleas for UP TO 4 weeks.

Advantage 11 also has an added ingredient that kills eggs and larvae too.

Frontline isn't working for fleas anymore, and Revolution I can't say is safe for use more often then monthly.

Advantage 11 is def. my flea med of choice.

Capstar is no good unless it is used for a situation like maybe the cat was away while you were on vacation, and know for sure there are zero fleas in your home. Then I would give one to the cat as soon as I went to pick up before the cat was back home.

However, it is not good for flea eggs/larvae either.
