So, I wasn't planning on getting anyone anything at work. That's how its been for years here. Usually, we agree our office Secret Santa is enough, where everyone gets a little something.

well, this year, my new project manager, that's been here for a month, got me a nice cat bracelet. Now I feel the need to get her something nice, 3 days before Christmas Shopping. lol. I'll have to run to Bass and get her a nice scarf as she's always wearing them.

Always have backup gifts on hand for those who decide to give you something and you need to give something nice back!

Draco, I love your bracelet....how pretty!

We had bought a nice gift certificate to Dunkin Donut for my brother and SIL who live there
; seriously, we never see them without a cup of something from DD. Well, our electrician was here on Saturday to try to finish up some work and he ended up spending six hours here! They had some problems trying to get the wires up through the wall to the switch in the computer room, plus they had to run the wires in the trench out to the shed, plus change out some of the receptacles in the house. The whole thing took way longer than he thought it would, even with Rick helping.

I felt so bad for him, the Saturday before Christmas and here he was, doing work for us. He doesn't drink much in the way of coffee, but he loves donuts, so well, we gave him the gift certificate to DD. He's really a heck of a nice guy and he does a good job. I never heard him get angry or anything. And he always has a nice word to say to the cats when he's here. He didn't say much, but he gave me a hug.

So now I have to get another GC for my brother and SIL. But that's OK. I can do that tomorrow when I'm out and about.

But I digress....sorry. We always pool money to get something nice for our Director. He's pretty much OK for a Director and he doesn't really give anybody grief. He leaves us alone for the most part. And he always gives us something very nice for Christmas. I can't complain. But that's it. We used to have a small party (just us in Planning, nobody else), basically a small lunch-type kind of thing. But we haven't done that in a couple years.

Our department head doesn't allow us to exchange Christmas gifts.  Even though I think that's wrong (they have a right to say that you can't waste company time opening gifts, etc., but I think gift-giving should be left up to the individual. It was done before in our department, and others there do it), I don't really miss it--I always received useless stuff (thank you, co-workers, who gave me candy, even though you knew I'm a diabetic--and I'm sure my anorexic co-worker, who everyone knows that she is, really appreciated the candy and cookies you also gave her, telling her that "she really should eat some").  I understand that "it's the thought that counts", but when the giver knows the recipient can't use the gift, but gives it to them anyway, that's not in the spirit of gift-giving, IMHO. When I used to make fudge for Christmas gifts, I always gave those who wouldn't eat sweets something else that I knew they'd like.

You reminded me of when I used to bake cakes for work. We had a very religious girl in out department who only ate kosher and I wasn't enough for her so I'd buy her a cake on my way to work from the bakery.
When I Was Still In England we'd put pieces of paper with everybody's name on in a box. Mix them up and we'd all take one and bought a Christmas present for who we picked. That way there was no favouritism and we were all happy.
How can you be forbidden to buy Christmas presents at work. Surely that's illegal?
