Hi, one of my foster kittens has panleukopenia, she's on the fourth day of fluids and antibiotics.
All the normal symptons vomit and bloody diahrea, This is the fourth  morning and she looked much much better
I do all treatment at home as there is no clinic (I live on an island)
sub -q fluids and injections

But this morning something long (flesh ??) came out of her anus....
I cannot find the vet on the phone... I do not know what to do, any similar experiences ?
part of the fleshy thing was broken
Is this the end for my kitten or she still has hope ?

Enclosed pics.. if anyone has seen anything like this all advise is highly appreciated

Thanks

That is definitely an emergency! She needs treatment asap or you will lose her. It may already be to late. Looks like a bad rectal prolapse. Without emergency surgery she will die.

I hope the moderators lock or remove this thread. If you had a medical emergency would you be asking strangers over the internet for medical advice? I'm having a heart attack, what should I do?

If you live in an area that cannot get a hold of a vet, I recommend that you buy a gun and learn how to shoot. I live in the country and sometimes farmers cannot get a hold of a vet. If you have an animal that is dying (deer hit by car), cow with a broken leg or other catastrophic injury, sometimes euthanasia is the best you can do. I had a horse twist his gut and go into shock. Having a thousand pound animal thrashing around and unable to control his body was the scariest thing I have ever seen. He ran over me and knocked over the vet. Was bumping into the walls and had no control over his body. It was a Sunday night and by some miracle I got the vet out. If not I would have had to have the neighbor shoot him. There was nothing on earth anyone could have done.

The vet said it was the worst case he had ever seen in his career. I do not have the stomach to shoot something but in that situation I probably could have done it, as the horse was in unbelievable agony.

If I had a vet / clinic available I would not ask for people's experiences, I was not asking for medical advise but if someone had any symptom like this before.

I'm a cat rescuer for many years now and is the first time I encounter something like this, most of the treatments I do is at home, fluids, injections etc...
I got hold of the vet later and he said this can happen when there is a lot of anal blood/diahrea, is the inner coat of the intestines. So we are still treating her with fluids and antibiotics as guided. Again, I wish there was a clinic here but there isn't... to get to a clinic involves taking ferries and spending there 1-2 nights in a hotel as there is not a daily connection, and unfortunately having only a part time job, I cannot afford it for all the strays I rescue and care for...

I would never get a gun or ever shot an animal, and specially not an animal I've been caring for for so long, I'm not a vet to decide if the animal should have euthanasia or not, and if is a young animal, I will do as much as I can and fight as much as I can to rescue her/him. I'm not dealing with dangerously big animals so this "solution" is definitely out of any discussion

Then you are comfortable with letting an animal suffer to death? If that is a rectal prolapse and it has torn, the cat will have a very painful death. I surely hope you have access to pain medication, but with no access to veterinary care I'm not sure how you would...

I truly pity your cat as that is a terrible and painful way to die. If you had a horse break a leg without euthanasia what would happen? There is limited blood supply to the legs. Once blood supply is damaged the leg itself would die and infection would set in. A miserable way to die.

without surgery or antibiotics do you really expect this cat to survive? This is a similar injury as a torn intestine. The tissue will die, bacteria will spread through the body and the cat will suffer a painful and prolonged death.

What point is there in letting it suffer when there is absolutely no hope of recovery? You admit you do not have the money to treat this. Clearly that is intestinal tissue.

If you were shot and your intestines hanging out yet you are still alive you would be in agony and begging for an end to the pain.

If you can't do it yourself find someone who can... police officer or animal control? A neighbor with a gun.. a friend who goes hunting?

Can you really live with yourself for making this cat suffer instead of allowing a quick passing.

At least stop administering fluids. Fluids may just prolong its suffering. Any animal with intestinal tissue outside its body is not going to survive.

I know you are attached to this cat. I've had animals I loved put to sleep. It is not easy but you do it because it is better not to let them suffer.

I can only offerings and prayers. And based on my limited experience with traveling among the Greek islands and the practicalities involved, I sympathize with your inability too get together a vet. Maybe SAWA or Nine lives could refer you to a vet you could call, email pictures. Good luck.

Just a little update to those that are not making this a personal issue, and I am not going to reply to those messages any more as they are irrelevant and make me waste energy I can spend in something more productive.

Thank you for your prayers and vibes.

Kitty is livelier and louder ! She ate a bit too.  Her eyes are brighter and her general mood has improved so I think she is feeling better
I keep getting advise from vets and as long as she keeps like this a few more days then she will make it for sure.... Still fluids 150-200ml/daily... still antibiotics and still antihemetic meds...

Merry Xmas all !

I'm glad to hear she's feeling better, hope she'll make a quick recovery.

I really feel for you, stuck in a place with no vet and no way of getting her to one. Thank you for all you are doing for these cats.

What happened regarding the thing that came out of her? If it was her intestines, how could she have survived? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad she's doing well, but I am befuddled?

She is a cutie and I am so glad she pulled through.  It's amazing how quickly the little ones can bounce back.

The thing that was coming out is the inner coat of her intestines, it happens in severe diahrrea (blood diahrrea) a human doctor explained to me it can happen also with humans when they have salmonella.
It was not the intestines and there was no need for surgery.
So I am in heaven with her !  her brother also got it but in a less severe form, just vomit and a bit of diahrrea (not one drop of blood) as soon as she contracted the panleukopenia I had started antibiotics with him, so it might have helped to protect his intestines from any infection when the virus actually got him... he is in his 2 last days of fluids and antibiotics and then he will be 100% well..

It didn't had to go back, it went out, vet told me I had to pull it, as creepy as it sounds, I did it, and I  had chills all over my body after...  but it could not be left hanging... she would have eventually taken it out  or push it in her next  visit to the litter box, but  I didn't wanted to risk it so I followed his advise....

Wow. I amsoooo happy she pulled through. Did the inner lining regrow or might she have lost use of a portion of her intestines?

You were brave! I've had plenty of practice of cleaning up cuts and puncture wounds, giving eye drops and antibiotics and cleaning up messy butts but I think that would have given me the chills too.

Vibes for a healthy life from now on.
