Does the flea treatment need to be applied on a CONSTANT basis?

Hi!  I just got from the vet for another problem and he found the fleas at my cat!  He gave to me the "Advantage !!" to use for the treatment.  What do I think about that?  That is the toxic medication that has to be applied the every month to keep fleas away from the cat.  He is the outdoor cat and he has the friend that doesn't even lives indoor (the his owner has the big dog the inside of house, so she just feed the cats the outside of house), and there are the few strays or who knows whose cats that he is in contact periodically.   The question is: does it cost to torture the animal and put at him this toxic chemical medication: at the order to get rid out of fleas, if he is going to get them again and over, again and over?  I would understand that if we would just get rid of the fleas and it would be done the once or twice.  But to have to put that at him at all the times, on the permanent basis?   Is that is not bad for cats health?  May be, better leave him with the fleas, he would not die from it?  But the toxic chemical could lead to different illnesses within the organism.  I'm puzzled the what is the right thing to do?  I did not even knew that he has the fleas, he was playful and fine and happy.  I'm just scared of all the chemicals that we put on oneselves and apply to our four-legged best friends as well and then we wonder from where they get human deseases.  Any thoughts?

I use revolution after stopping just long enough for fleas to take hold. Oh did I mdntion he got worms from the fleas, too? Yep!!! Now that's toxic meds to get rid of.

Do you want fleas in your house, or not? Your kitty to get worms, ir not?

There's natural ways to deal with fleas but they are extremely time consuming. I took my cat off Advantage II thinking he was an indoor kitty and thus immune.

The secret advantage to being flea free is if another biting Insect finds it's way into your house, you won't have to second guess what it is, and thus deal with it inappropriately.

Thank you, misterwhiskers!

I definitely appreciate the advice.  I have only one baby to take care about :-) and he is precious, it is why I don't want to harm him.

Thank you!  I'm trying to be; he is sick now with the flu or cold: vet made him shot antibiotic and put it also in the eye.  He is miserable.  Snizzing and eye is shut, no appetite, don't even drink.  My previous cat never was sick -- up to when she died, but she was on natural died: she ate what we ate.  Never applied fleas exterminator, sure she had fleas (she long haired), but I did not knew about them.  She lived 14 and didn't visit vet, only once before she died.  She was outdoor.  If not cyst on belly, she could live longer, she was still running on the roofs and catching mouse. :-)  This baby doesn't want eat natural chicken and fish: only dry and cans.  :-(
