Hi, i'm new to this forum and to just cats in general

So 4 days ago my bestfriend said she found two kitten while throwing her trash, so she took them home, but the problem is that she already have two dogs and two cats nd her mom won't let her have more cats.. So she was searching for someone who wanted to have cats, and i told her my older sister want cats, but since my older sister is a bit uuhh... irresponsible so i have to take care of the kittens for like a week until at least they open their both eyes.

Everything was fine, but one of them won't drink milk, and have a yellow lump on where his umbilical cord was, when i touch her she always escape, and when i feed her milk she doesn't swallow it, yesterday she was 103gr and today she is back to 99gr so i'm worried.

I can't really go to a vet, but i can wait until my bestfriend come back from school and ask her, but she told me vets here don't take care of kitten... so i wanted to know what this could be, and if her life is in danger?? :/ Right now she doesn't stop crying but i don't know what to do since she won't drink milk etc

If she isnt drinking the milk and is going down in weigh, yes her life is in danger.

What milk are you giving her?   And how are you giving it?   The easiest and safest is when they are laying down, head up.  With a syringe without needle - best size 3 ml,  in the corner of the mouth, slowly so they manage to swallow.   If you dont have a syringe, you can use a dropper, although it isnt so handy.

A bottle with a nap may be more difficult.

Make sure the kitten is warm enough before you even try and feed.  When not warm enough, they dont have proper strengh.  And they cant process the milk properly.

Another tip.  If she seems weak or lethargic, you can try and perk some energy in her by smearing a little glucose sugar on her gum.  In the shop the brandname for glucose sugar powder may be Dextrose or Dextropur.   There are usually flavored tablets as candy, or for sports use.  This is useful too if you dont get the unflavored powder.  Crush the tablets, wet a little, and smear on.

If you dont have glucose sugar proper, you can try with white karo syrup, or even honey.   These both sugar sources do contain some glucose sugar.

Also, being dehydrated (not enough with fluids) takes force from them.  So a little water or homemade pedialyte now and then, is wise.

Do you have a kmr (kitten mothermilk replacement )  or goat milk?  Or you use what you got, ie cow milk?   We dont recommend cow milk, but I have understood, kittens sometimes survive even on cow milk.

Whiskas kitten milk they sell in shops is really a treat for adult cats, its NOT milk for small kittens.

Very good you take weigh in grammes daily.  This is the key to know the development.

Re the yellow lump.   I dont know what it is, your descrition isnt good enough.   It may be a bacteria infection, with pus building up.   It may be  her intestines coming up.  It apparently hurts her when you are touching this.

So it is really a vet errant.

Re the vets arent good with kittens.  Its often true, vets are often not good at helping with weak kittens, literally dont having a clue.   At best they give a fluid shot into the skin at neck.   Which is no bad thing, as lack of water (=dehydration) is one of the major dangers.

Also, you cant count on the vet will take over the care of the kitten, even if the vet knows how to help a weak kitten.  You can get good instructions from such a good vet, but all the basic care you must do yourself.

But.   Here we do have something clear cut.   Even a non kitten expert vet will know what this is.  If he is decently skilled with cats.   And so you will know if it is something possible to cure without big costs, or if it is best to let her go into the eternal sleep.

So my advice is, you raise the necessary money asap, and take her to the vet, for this  yellow lump on her stomach.

If your parents arent willing to give the necessary money, you can surely bargain promising you will help out home some extra.  You can surely also ask your older sis to participate in the bargains.

The little one needs this vet visit, to get know what it is.

Another option is if some neighbour is knowleable about cats or dogs. Preferably a mom of many children.  Such moms are good at organizing things and manage difficult situations.   Phone around or go out and knack the doors.   If you ask for assitance when in need, the social norm is to try and help out, even from people who usually dont talk with you.

You can also ask at your city shelter, if they know and recommend a cheap vet, or do have a vet helper, or someone experienced, who is willing to look see the kitten.

Make sure the kitten is warm and cozy during the transport!

Your sis or parents can perhaps do part of the phoning around?

A good site for assist with orphans is www.kitten-rescue.com,  you will surely find good ideas and suggestions there.   We do also have some articles aroung on our own site.

Ah, one more thing.   Are you stimulating her to poo and pee?  Is she peeing and poing at least now and then?   If they dont poo out what they have, they lose appetite, precisly like humans.  And if it is bad enough, it will be life threatening by itself.

Please continue to report, and ask questions.

Tx for caring!

Good luck!

I'm giving them both powdered milk, at first i gave it with an eyedrop but then i remember having a syringue so now i'm using it, and i'm giving it the way you described.

To keep them warm i heat uncooked rice in a sock and then i put it next to them with a second layer of sock just in case it's too hot.

Here there's no goat milk  (I live in Reunion Island) :/ maybe there is but it would be like really faaaar away, and i'll go look for kmr tomorrow, i didn't know such thing existed since i'm really new to cats.. I'll go to the vet with my bestfriend tomorrow so I just have to go through tonight (here it's 5PM right now) and hope she'll be okay :(

I don't have any neighbour that have cats, the only person that i know that have cats is my bestfriend but i saw she doesn't have that many aknowledge about cats and their needs.

And yes i make her pee and poop but since yesterday she hasn't pooped :/

thanks for all the advices ~

I see you are doing everything as may be done by an amateur, a young person at that.  Apparently you do have a knack for it.   Maybe beginning of a life pursuit, even a profession??

I wish you and your little protegees Good Luck, of all my heart!
