I have a neutered male cat, about 2-3 years old. He recently had a urinary issue (partial blockage) that cleared and I decided to switch him to a special urinary wet food (Purina Pro Plan Focus Urinary Tract Health Formula). He likes it and eats it fine, I have cut out all dry food. First off, I would normally slowly switch him over like you are supposed to, but he was actually out of dry when this happened, so I just purchased the wet and went with it. This is not the first time he has had wet food, he was raised on it and he only spent a few months on some cheap dry kibble due to money constraints, that is when he developed blockage. Anyway, since switching about a week ago, he has had sticky darker super gag worthy poops. He tends to get it stuck in his fur then drag butt and get it all over. I figured his stomach would adjust by now but it hasn't.

I am looking for a trusted reasonably priced wet cat food that will help him maintain good urinary function (low PH I guess?). I really get confused looking at all of the info online, so many things say one thing and another site says something else. I just want him to have firmer normal less smelly poops like he did on his dry food and old cheap wet foods (Friskies Cat Food Classic Pate) from the grocery store. Do I just need to wait it out for him to adjust to this new food or should I just be looking into something else?

Any help or advice would be great and please avoid the vet suggestions as financially it isn't an option unless he becomes life or death sick or blocked again. This site has been great to me so far, I appreciate it and so does my boy Roo (cats name).

Oh yeah, he really likes pate style and will mostly just lick the gravy off anything else, so if it isn't all mushed up he basically wont eat it.

Edit: Perhaps a good dry treat/supplement/vitamin would be in order here? Any suggestions on this?

You could backtrack a bit and see if it makes a difference. If he was eating Friskies pates and doing well on them, go back to them until his stool corrects itself (it doesn't usually take long if food is the culprit). Once his stool is back to normal, begin mixing the Pro Plan in slowly and see how it goes. You may have better luck easing him onto it gradually.
