I am the proud co-owner of a 8-9 month old shelter rescue named Albus who, over the last five months, has become the absolute light of my life. I have crazy cat lady written all over me.

My boyfriend and I are both leaving for the holiday and I'm really panicking about the cat. We called around and found a pet sitting company (good reviews, licensed, bonded, and insured, etc) who has agreed to watch to watch our kitten. However, I am petrified by the idea of something bad happening. The woman working in my area has agreed to come once a day on Christmas and the two following days (we are leaving the 24th and returning the 28th). She is stopping by for a consultation to meet us and the kitten on Saturday but i feel really weird and panicky about letting a stranger in my house with my baby.

I do not have friends in the area and we don't know our neighbors so that's not an option. I have a coworker who can visit once but she is unable to see our kitten any day other than the 26th. He spends A lot of time alone since my boyfriend and I both work, and we have left him alone for two nights before with no issues at all, but I can't help but worry when I know he's on his own. We briefly considered boarding, but I cannot in good conscience put a cat I got from a shelter in a cage again, even if it's the nicest cage in the world.

Does anyone have any advice or comforting words? Is there a way I can make sure this pet sitter won't neglect my little man? Am I better off leaving him on his own with a visit from my coworker, who I fully trust? I wish he could come with us, but a 1200 mile trek is too much for a little cat, especially for just four days.

I'd trust a licensed bonded pet-sitter any day over a coworker or friend.

I have heard a few horror stories where people rely on friends to bad results.

Your petsitter makes a living taking care of pets, she/he can't afford to neglect a kitty, it'll hurt her business. Plus she has good reviews so you know people have used her and she's taken good care of their pets.

I'm sure your little one is in excellent hands and will be fine. :)

Thanks!

My concern for the sitter is largely due to the fact that this is a pet sitting company and not an individual sitter. There are about 30 sitters working in a very, very large metro area and while I can ready dozens of happy reciews on Angie's List, I can't find anything about the sitter I'm working with specifically. This is the best reviewed company in the area (and one of the priciest, but that wouldn't deter me) so I'm probably worrying about nothing, it's just hard to let someone you don't know take care of your kitty.

Would it be appropriate to ask her to send me picture messages or the like while I'm away so that I can see he's okay? We plan to leave extra food and water bowls just in case something happens but I'd love to know that she's been there when she says she will.

I would go with the pet sitter, they have the most to lose if something would happen (their business). That IS their business. Friends and even relatives can too often say "I got too busy, or I forgot to do this", or a million different things. Pet sitters love animals or they wouldn't have chose that profession. I would definitely lock up any valuables, checkbooks, etc. but I would do that any time we leave for an extended time. Good luck!

As a long time cat lover and rescuer working with crazy cat people.... trust me they've heard weirder requests. We have a Kitty Kat Hilton here which is a cat only deluxe kitty resort. And each kitty has their own webcam so the owners can check in on them.

As long as you asked politely I'm sure she won't mind be asked. She might not be able to, but I bet she's been asked before.
