What is  an acceptable  % of phosphorus in cat food  for the average cat ?

Is this something I should be looking for ?

Does anyone know the % of phosphorus  in Fancy Feast Classic formulas ?

Try these charts:

http://catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf

http://catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPhosphorus9-22-12.pdf

I don't know if there is a specific amount of phosphorus an average healthy cat needs. I'm not sure if Dr. Lisa addresses it on her Catinfo.org web site but you can check. Seafood is generally high in phosphorus so those should only be fed occasionally.
So according to that chart Fancy Feast Classic formulas have an average of 2.10 %  , is that high ?

@LTS3  , Thank you for your help ..

I could not find a specific % of phosphorus  required . I guess it is not really an issue unless a cat has medical reasons  that need a low phosphorus diet .

I did find this info on www.catinfo.org

"  look  for a food  that is low in phosphorus - either below ~1.0-1.2% dry matter (not 'as fed'), or below ~250-300 mg/100 kcal."

Which  I guess is  for cats that have had urinary tract issues and  mine do not so I will try to find something in the middle ..

I found  this website that lists several different brands , US canned cat food Data ..

It is an up to date list .. It is pretty interesting .

Phosphorus is contained in meat, so I would think that you wouldn't want to limit phosphorus unless there's issues like UTIs or kidney disease. Fish/seafood has high phosphorus, plus has mercury and can be addictive, so general recommendations are not to feed too much.

That's pretty much what our vet said when I asked her about phosphorus levels for young (adult) cats. She's far more concerned about grains and carbs.

Great , thank you . That is very helpful .. I don't feed fish  anyway , my cats do not care for it too much ..

I refer to the food chart frequently, however, some of the stats are out dated because some of the company's  have changed their ingredients etc.. If you want to be sure, contact the company directly!  I've called lots of them asking for carb and phosphorus levels! They seem to have this info at their finger tips!
