I put down Christopher Thomas last week. At the same time, my ShakerToy was hit by a blood clot in the aorta which has paralyzed his hind legs. He can't walk, just drag himself a short distance across the floor, cannot stand or make it into the litter box. The vet says prognosis is poor.

And I can't sleep, am irritated with the other cats 9(the two who are not functional or here any more were my favourites - active, affectionate, lovable males who greeted me when I came home and slept with me and chased each other. Now, not much energy in the apartment, only 3 lazy, unaffectionate females who only are interested in stealing the food I am giving ShakerToy, never in me or anything else. I feel so alone, so depressed, hopeless.

At first, I was numb, now that's starting to wear off. I don't know what to do. Feel as if I can't stand this. These cats are my only family...

So sorry to hear of so much loss in a very short while. You must be beside yourself. To see your poor baby paralyzed and helpless is one of the hardest things a pet owner can experience. You are going through so much- my heart goes out to you.

Those three "lazy unaffectionate" females could be what helps you get through this difficult time. My laziest, least affectionate cat has a regal bearing. His nobility inspires me to be a stronger person when I feel like I'm falling apart. He stays serene when I feel like I can't cope. It makes me love him all the more.

Sometimes our cats can comfort in other ways than by showing overt affection.

Sending prayers your way in this dark time.

Thanks so much for answering. I will try to get the others to be interested in something else but food - if I can get them off my bed, it would help, too.  They probably are in mourning, too.

They must be mourning just as you say. Your household has suffered some horrific losses and you all are feeling the pain. Losses like this are especially hard at the holidays. You will be in my thoughts.

You need them (the girl kitties) as much as they need you. So many of us out here unfortunately know the pain you're going through. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss and for what your ShakerToy is going through. From experience, there is nothing worse than feeling so helpless to do anything for your baby, and knowing the prognosis isn't good.  You are in my thoughts.
