Hello! Just signed up today out of desperation. I recently (2days ago) adopted a 3 month old kitten from the shelter. Feral and terrified of everything. I understand it will take some time for him to get used to my partner and I and I was willing to take time with him..until he peed on the couch. Now, he knows how to use the litter box. Except, he's very active at night and that's when he does the deed! Tonight, my boyfriend slept on the couch to deter Reuben, from peeing and guess what? He peed all over his legs..(bf woke up but was too tired to deal with it) I however, smelled it immediately and when I went to clean it and place Rueben in his sleeping area, he hissed at me. I seriously, don't know what to do. My house smells terrible and I just want to give him back to the shelter. It's only been 2 DAYS! HALP! He's had all of his shots, and whatnot. Perfectly healthy but this urinating business has to stop!

Does he have just one litter box? Some cats require at least two - one to pee in and one to poop in, with both being cleaned as quickly as possible. Also, since he's young, scared and feral, it would be best to confine him to one room he can feel safe in till he settles in, then gradually introduce him to the rest of your home. This article contains some tips you can follow: Inappropriate Peeing Problems Answered This thread, Should kitten have access to whole house while home alone? (Inappropriate peeing) describes a situation similar to yours.

Are you expecting a feral cat to become domesticated overnight?

Set him up in the garage for starters.

Living an indoor lifestyle with humans is too much too fast in this case.

Also Buy some enzyme cleaner to treat the couch. I agree that you probably need to keep him in one room such as a bedroom where he can hide out for a period. I assume when you brought him home he found a place to hide that may be a good spot too. he needs to do it for a period as this is their natural behavior upon coming to a new home. you may not see him for a day or two but let him do that. Just keep his food and the litterbox near his hiding place. Peeing especially when a Cat does it on someone and not something though gross, is not always to be interpreted as bad behavior. It can be done out of insecurity or I had one do it out of affection for me. It's Completely unwanted by the human though. In all likelihood the cat was marking your boyfriend as his now probably along with the Couch. If he feels secure this behavior should stop but you have to clean the areas properly. If you try to rush this hiding out process of you kitteb you will have a wild and terrorized cat and probably one that inappropriately "marks" out of insecurity. Be patient and it will work out ok he is just very scared.
